Upgrading from Tiger to Leopard: a nightmare!

Is any of your stuff in the Previous System folder (Users)? If so, you should log into Root per Apple's instructions, rename the previous Users subfolder containing your stuff to your preferred username, move the folder to the new Users folder on your hard disk, and complete Apple's steps...

    Help -- Which Router ... ???

If you're open to a more expensive router yet still want ease of use, get an AirPort Extreme.

When connected to wifi my internet browsers don't work.

No, that's not what I meant, djackmac, though not a bad idea as well. Power-cycling means cycling power between off and on. The AirPort status menu is the menu on the right side of the menubar with the four curves representing wireless signal strength.

Upgrading from Tiger to Leopard: a nightmare!

Yes, changing your username without following a specific set of instructions for doing so will make your stuff disappear, though it's still there. Here's Apple's official way to do it. You might be able to bring your stuff back first by changing your username back and restarting.

Upgrading from Tiger to Leopard: a nightmare!

Did you choose Upgrade or Archive & Install? If the latter, was Preserve Users & Network Settings checked (the default)? Ultimately, is any of your missing stuff in a Previous Systems folder in your hard disk?

    Word 2008 Mac OSX

If you follow the log during an Archive & Install installation, MisterMe, you'll see that Installer moves all of one's stuff aside first, then installs the system, then moves the stuff back into place.

djackmac: kkopmbarji doesn't have a Windows machine; it's another Mac. kkombarji: Have you tried power-cycling AirPort in the AirPort status menu?

    Word 2008 Mac OSX

Yes, Archive & Install does archive all your stuff in order to restore it with a new install of Mac OS X. Have you run Software Update? Do you have about the same amount of hard disk space free as before? Do you have a backup? What happens if you log out and log in? If you haven't been asked to...

    Word 2008 Mac OSX

I'm confused. If you dragged Word out of the Dock, it didn't disappear in a poof of smoke? Or do you actually have Word on the Desktop? If the latter, you need to put it back in the Microsoft Office 2008 folder. It's probably crashing because all its supporting files are in that folder.

    folders first...how?

Following on DeltaMac's comments, what is your actual visual behavior when looking at a list of files and folders? Do you search for an item by scrolling through the list or by typing the first one or more letters of its name? Do you use Spotlight to find items instead of browsing your...

When connected to wifi my internet browsers don't work.

What Mac is it failing on? Did you follow djackmac's suggestion to check for proxies? How is DNS set up in WAN? How about on the MacBook Pro? Generally, are there any differences in network settings between this Mac and the MacBook Pro?

    folders first...how?

You can't necessarily get Finder to list folder first, but certainly grouped together by sorting by Kind instead of Name. You can manually force any item to the top of a Finder list by prefixing its name with a character that is alphabetically earlier, such as a space or tilde. Alternatively...

When connected to wifi my internet browsers don't work.

You need to log into your router in your Web browser (192.168.2.1) and look at its manual setup for DHCP, TCP/IP, and wireless. Is that a Belkin router?

Looks fine. Now, my concern is your router's TCP/IP and wireless network settings and anything you can find about how it serves the Internet to your computer.

Sounds like an issue with Network preferences. How do they differ between Built-In Ethernet and AirPort? Check TCP/IP and DNS for each.

    Disk Utility problem

Is your software up to date? Have you ever run the Apple Keyboard Update? Again, can you borrow a USB keyboard from any other computer to test. If you borrow a PC keyboard, note that Alt is Option and Windows is Command.

    Downgrading OS?

Hmm. I don't think Apple ever offered a retail install disc containing anything other than the initial 10.4 release, unlike when Leopard was current and Apple updated retail packages a couple times along the way. For sure, an iBook that shipped with 10.4.x cannot install 10.3. However, I'm...
