    Toast Titanium 7.0.1

Toast (of any persuasion) doesn't PLAY movies. It BURNS movies. That may be why it is called "Toast." If you want to PLAY a movie, try DVD Player or VLC Media Player.

CD Cleaner is it safe for my Mac Mini?

Apple recommends against a CD/DVD laser lens cleaners for slot-loading drives. That said, your drive is going dixie anyway, so what more harm could a lens cleaner do? And it might well help. I suggest the one from radio shack. It has short bristles.

    Can't add video to iTunes

Why go back to iTunes 6? Have you tried the freebie iSquint on those movies? It'll optimize the movie for iPod/iTunes. Get it at http://www.isquint.org/ Yes, get latest QuickTime (Pay for "Pro") and repair your permissions (That often fixes iTunes 7 quirks).

iTunes is fickle about burning playlists

I suspect your "CD Info.cidb" data base was slightly munged. When you swapped tracks 6 and 11, you rewrote that segment and fixed the problem. Swap 'em back and see if all is happy again.

    Pioneer DVD problems?

That 104 is a tad long of tooth, Ed. When failing, a drive often loses one feature (CD or DVD) first. Spend the $45 and get a 111: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/optical-drives/superdrives/powermac/

CD's burned in iTunes won't play on a CD player

Changing the format to MP3 only makes things worse. Fewer CD players "do" MP3 than do CD-R. That said, some CD/DVD players simply ignore home-brew CDs. I used to say "older models," but I'm told that new Mercedes Benz players won't read CD-Rs. If the CD player is spec'd to play CD-Rs, then I'd...

Region-free DVD Player for Mac OS X...

Gab, RegionX won't do squat unless you've first made your drive region-free. I believe it says so in the readme. At least it says so here: http://xvi.rpc1.org/region.html You'll need to learn how (if at all -- Matshita drives don't) you can "flash" your particular drive under your particular...

    cant burn properly with finder

What exactly are you trying to burn? If it's a movie DVD you ripped, neither a Finder nor a Disk Utility burn will work. If you're doing a data DVD in Panther, that won't work, either. Those are OSX system limitations.

Application incorrectly being recognized as a document

Tell us the program and where you got it. I, for one, will be happy to take a look at it. I expect some of the real experts will, too.

connect to the internet through a router

Sharon, you don't need to look at the special settings. Once you say connect via ethernet and select DHCP. The router will set all those things for you. The only TCP/IP setting you have that should be changed is from TCP/IP as needed to TCP/IP always on. The "as needed" is iffy. Hope this helps.

another "you have inserted a disk containing no volumes that MAC OS X can read" prob

You might try a CD/DVD lens cleaner. If that doesn't do the trick, I suggest replacing the optical drive.

Trouble upgrading to panther from 9.2.2

Is that the retail Panther installer or the one for the PB? If the latter, sorry. An installer for one Mac most likely won't work with another.

    Can't play dvd

I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't a "region" issue. Try VLC Media Player (from versiontracker.com). It seems fairly immune to region.

    VHS to Mac Update please

You don't need MacTheRipper for DVDs that aren't copy protected. Just use Handbrake (or whatever) to convert from the VIDEO_TS file on your DVD. Or Just drag the contents of the DVD onto your HD. DVDPlayer will happily read a VIDEO_TS folder.

Internet/Router/ISP problems, sorry not sure where to post!

Masamune, the most common problem is keeping your old "network" prefs in dial-up configuration. Look at your network prefpane. It should be something like this: Loc: Automatic Show Net status: Built-in e-net Show Port: Built-in e-net Show Built-in e-net: ...TCP tab: Using DHCP ... Appletalk...

Recording vinyl and general audio editing

I use Final Vinyl (v1 -- I hate v2) with a Griffin iMic to capture the sounds from turntable or tape deck. I pretty much needed the iMic because my old turntable doesn't have "line level" output, and iMic has a switchable pre-amp. After capturing the sound (with or without FV's equalizer...
