    Random occurrences of SubmitDiagInfo

It is only because I run Little Snitch that I notice this happening. The Show Details link effectively only provides the PID of the process itself. No processes seem to affected by this apparent error notification. What could possibly be causing this?

    Insecure Startup Items

New admin account made no difference. Deleted .DS_store with Terminal and restarted. Messaged still occur. Digging around the logs I found this wich may, or may not be significant. NOTABLY a new version of VirtualBox has been installed, but I would hesitate to blame it given all the other erros...

    Insecure Startup Items

OK. Prior to looking at your reply on this site I did the following. 1. Used Onyx to make invisible file visible. 2. Had an aha moment and looked in the logs to find that a file HP<something> was not owned by uid(0). 3. Opened the offending directory and deleted .DS_store which immediately...

    Insecure Startup Items

On startup I get the following displayed several times in succession (each time clicking on OK) Insecure Startup Item Disabled "/Library/Startupitems/.DS_Store" has not been started because it does not have the proper security settings This is clearly MacPro HD/Library ... there is no...

Official Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Thread & FAQ

I agree with you, Dr X. The beauty of CCC is that it keeps an up-to-date bootable clone. I schedule mine for once-a-day at 3:00 AM. From now on I will manually clone after any significant amount of change. If you are extremely cautious, you should make two clones on a daily, weekly, or...

Official Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Thread & FAQ

I am surprised that Mac OS doesn't give a warning when disk access is failing. Indeed the S.M.A.R.T status is shown as OK. The lesson seems to be that when pin-wheels are shwoing up almost everywhere it is time to back up your disk. BTW, I recommend Carbon Copy Cloner for this purpose...

Official Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Thread & FAQ

The system became totally unresponsive - beachballs everywhere, even immediately on restart. I decided to try backing up, and used Carbon Copy Cloner, attempting to clone the whole hard drive to an external USB-connected drive. This eventually hung. On reboot I was able to see that at least my...

Official Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Thread & FAQ

More information: I start with first app being Terminal. It takes a long time to login. Here are some results from the top command xxx:~me$ top -s 10 Processes: 85 total, 2 running, 83 sleeping, 282 threads 08:59:54 Load Avg: 0.00, 0.05, 0.05 CPU usage: 2.18%...

Official Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Thread & FAQ

Thank you for reminding me of the repair of permissions vs repair of disk. Both show all clear. As I painfully type this with the pin-wheel spinning and long delays in echoing typing, here are a selection of symptoms, which occur more often than not. Delay after clicking account at login...

Well, after an hour or so, the problem has returned. Perhaps some kind of resource leak?

Official Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Thread & FAQ

Thanks for your suggestion. You may not be aware that Onyx can do this and much more. Indeed Disk Utility has been able to be used to repair permissions in a running system for some several versions of Mac OS X. In any case I booted from the install disk and, as expected, there were none to be...

Official Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Thread & FAQ

This may not mean much, but I have noticed some daemons which I don't recall seeing previously: rpc.lockd rpc.quotad rpc.statd I have no idea why Remote Procedure Call infrastructure should be executing at all. Might this indicate an intruder?

Official Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Thread & FAQ

Snow Leopard has been performing OK until yesterday when literally everything slows down with the "spinning wheel of procrastination" on almost any action at all. I have done a complete maintenance with Onyx and restarted, with no effect. Examples of slowness: Copying a 42MB file to...

Official Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Thread & FAQ

Select a Destination shows my main disk iMacHD and Time Machine Backups both marked with the yellow triangle warning: Security Update 2010-001 can't be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update. It would be useful if the message indicated what the...

How to make a stack from a folder

My example using the Applications folder was a bad one. I need to do this with an arbitrary folder. Thankfully, you solution covers both. So much for ignoring common shortcuts.!

How to make a stack from a folder

I want to be able to take a folder (perhaps in a Finder window) and automate the construction of a stack. For example, take the Applications folder and create a set of aliases for everything in it. Then transfer these aliases to another folder, perhaps called "Applications_stack". The aliases...
