Can't connect to Epson Scanner

I just purchased a used Epson 3170 Perfection Photo Scanner. When I try to use Image Capture, the software recognizes the scanner as a device. But I get the message "Failed to open a session on the device." Please help, thanks!

Note: From the Epson site, I downloaded an Epson ICA Driver v5.2.6 for Image Capture because "This driver corrects possible issues when using Apple's Image Capture utility with an Epson scanner."
