Can't connect to local servers

Hi there,

We've got a local linux IMAP server that when I try and connect to it from mail.app or Entourage I get the following errors.

Mail.app:
The IMAP server @linux-serv2@ is not responding. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the "incoming mail server field". If it still doesn't respond, the server might be temporarily unavaliable

Entourage:
Entourage cannot find the server. Verify the server information is entered correctly in the Account settings, and that your DNS settings in the Network pane of System Preferences are correct.

We have got internet access (obviously!) and have access to connect to shares on other people's PCs.

When we use Remote Desktop, we can connect to machines using an IP address it works, but if we use a computer name it doesnt.

We're using the same DNS settings etc as the PCs in our office, and they work fine.

Any ideas what the problem is?

Best wishes,
Rob

I find the name for the mailserver very odd / confusing. Maybe that is the problem. Otherwise translate the name to an ip-number and fill in the ip-number. That should work anyway. If it works, the dns resolve seems to fail. Does the ip-number usage also not work, than other issues might be causing the problem.

Good luck, Kees
