Connecting Powerbook to Netgear Print Server

I am trying to connect a Powerbook running OS 10.4.8 to a Canon iP2000 printer through a Netgear PS121 printserver. I can ping--even configure through the browser--the printserver from the Mac.

The iP2000 prints just fine when directly connnected to the powerbook, after I installed the driver. But when I try to add it as a network printer, the drop-down menu in the Printer Setup Utility doesn't list this printer--even though I've already installed the driver. Can anyone tell me how to add a driver to this list?

If anyone here has successfully connected an iP2000 to a Mac through the Netgear printserver (preferably without spending $100 to buy the printfab driver) I'd sure appreciate some tips.

Another problem I expect is selecting the driver queue.....do I put the printserver's device name there? The Windows computer shows a device name for the printserver.....

This question gets asked and answered on this forum every couple of days. You cannot use a USB driver with a networked printer. You have to use a CUPS driver. The Canon PIXMA iP2000 is only partially supported by OpenPrinting.org (formerly LinuxPrinting.org). However, it is supposed to be fully supported by PrintFab.

Thank you for your most clear and succinct response....much easier to understand than the workarounds i saw described for other printers when I searched the forum before posting.
