Connecting to DSL via XP

Our SMC ADSL modem/router is temporarily out of action so we bought a cheap PCI ADSL modem off eBay in the meantime. It's not as reliable as the router but it works, however I'm having problems sharing the connection. The modem is installed in a 500MHz Athlon (256mb) running Windows XP. We tried the built-in Internet Sharing which seems to be a DHCP server, and it works with my flatmate's PC laptop, but not with my G4. I also tried installing a proxy server on the desktop and again that worked with the laptop but not my Mac. When I tried the Windows Sharing it seemed to allocate an IP with no problems, but still no Interweb. I tried using both 192.168.0.1 (the address XP assigned itself when I switched sharing on) and my ISPs nameservers but no luck. I can see other machines on the network but haven't managed to get the DSL connection shared so far. Is there something I'm doing wrong relating to XP's Internet Sharing or should I be using a proxy server? Any help would be appreciated, my system details are in my signature, please let me know if I've missed anything out. Thanks in advance.
