Found this, explains the 3 main ways to upgrade to 10.4 with all the advantages/disadvantages, seems to cover pretty much everything, including manking backups of your backups
when upgrading from 10.1 to Jaguar i made backups using the mac os disk burning utility, luckily enough I didnt need them, but when i checked them under jaguar they refused to work, got toast now for my next upgrade....
