hello friends, if anyone can help my friend out he would be eternally greatful. He's teaching English in Japan right now and cant get his hands on Mac OS X (English) because it's illegal to sell it there (?!). Here's an extract from his email:

"...anyway have a question... do you know anyone who has or can get a ibook or powerbook OS, ie MacOS X. its illegal to sell english macOS here, dont ask why. if so is it possible to get a copy?

Mac OS X is sold in a packet that has ALL THE LANGUAGES.

Your friend can buy OS X in Japanese computer store, and choose English to installation language.

Check and see if it's acutally illegal to sell the English version there. If it is, we can't help. It would be illegal. Site rules prohibit it.

Let me try to explain this better: Mac OS X packet contains ALL THE LANGUAGES. Once you start to install, it does not matter in what country you have bought your OS X cds. They are the same in every country. So he can buy the CDs in Italy or Japan, and still choose to install the OS in Korean or Norwegian if he wants (or English)!

So the versions sold in Japan should contain the English language packs. --- Asking for a copy is not according to the site policy, so in the very improbable case English would not be contained in the CDs of OS X sold in Japan, I suggest your friend to order the copy of the OS X in Apple.com site (store).

at the least the language packs would be available as download thru apple. most likely thru software update.

I live in Japan and I bought a Japanese version of Mac OSX. I changed it to English without too much trouble. The enitial menus come up in Japanese but all you have to do is choose english and it changes everything over... If you have an other questions just let me know....
