ichat and safari not in english?

Hi

I'm trying to help my father out - he's got problems with safari and ichat (latest versions of both) and using 10.2.6 on a 667 PB

In some sites safari displays gobbledegook (to me at least) and when he uses iChat, it shows up in the same language (although it arrives at destination in English!)

If anyone can help, it would be much appreciated - it's driving me nuts!

I've checked preferences etc. but can't see what I'm obviously missing...

What does he have for text encoding?

Safari menus >>> View > Text Encoding > Default, Western or Unicode should work.

believe it or not, he has nothing selected under text encodings...

and nothing is selectable - it's all light grey..

any idea how to switch this back on please?!
