Jaguar locks up when network-attached computer sleeps

Hey all.

Sorry about the long subject line, but that's the only way to describe this problem, which is infuriating.

I constantly go back and forth between two machines sitting in front of me: a Titanium and a desktop G4. I check email on my laptop, and always keep it running, but sometimes I need to work on the other machine, and don't want to be distracted by email.

So, I put the lid down on my laptop.

The problem is, if my desktop machine has the laptop mounted, any disk-related activity (such as using the Finder, or opening an Open/Save dialog box) results in the spinning beach ball.

Obviously, the desktop can no longer find the laptop, but rather than just noticing this immediately and allowing me to use my local disks only, the machine will stay hung like this for 3-5 MINUTES.

I suspect this has something to do with Rendezvous, although that is just a hunch. It never happened with OS X 10.0 or 10.1.
