Macbook will not recognize speakers

I recently purchased a new (used) Macbook Unibody computer. Once I installed a fresh install of snow leopard, the speakers are not recognized by the software. I now the speakers work due to sound of the "c sharp" when the computer is turned on, and from putting another hard drive in the computer the speakers worked too. Any info regarding resolving this issue would be very helpful.
 
Open /Applications/Utilities/Audio MIDI Setup and see if playing with that could help.
