Simply call your nearest Motorola chip distributor - there's a list on Moto's web site - and demand part number PPCEVALSP37457. Arrow Electronics, for one, is offering the board for $5046.96 - that's got to be good for a few air miles. When the box arrives, go to work removing the 7457 and soldering it onto your PowerBook motherboard in place of the chip you already have.

The article has a somewhat non-serious tone, and it doesn't seem to mention volume pricing. This is one of those times I wish this is just an exaggeration by TheRegister because I'm hoping for a PB update soon to buy an old model for cheap or a nice speedy new one.

You can not trust everything you read. I question whether they would sell to a private party.
You would need to go to:
http://e-www.motorola.com/
and do the volume price quibble with them. Why would you buy in volume when you only need one? And why buy the part when for that price you can get a PB for less than that.

My concern with volume pricing is for Apple's sake not my own. Obiously an individual would not purchase a G4 CPU alone. I'm just curious of the cost to Apple for these new chips to go into PowerBooks since it will affect the price of the final assembled product.

Actually, Apple has a contract with Motorola which dictates their price. A huge volume contract usually gives a lower price than what is printed for the public. And the contract is probably not available to the general public.

Well, if the rumors of a G5 PB next year are true, then there should be more drop in the prices to come. Which brings up the age-old dilemma. Buy the G5 PBs (probably) or do the wise thing when it comes to electronics and buy one generation behind to maximize $$$.
