You'll need at least Photoshop CS3. Older versions won't be compatible with OS X 10.5 or later.

If you want a more affordable alternative to PhotoShop, I'd recommend GIMP. http://www.gimp.org/macintosh/
It's free. It's a bit different than PhotoShop, but does most of the things PhotoShop does (especially the older versions). It's worth giving a try before you buy PhotoShop.
