Random problems with iChat (2.0) and Yahoo Messenger

I'm at my wit's end.

A friend and I (long time Mac users) have been trying to solve this problem for weeks. We are both running Panther. We both have and use Y! Messenger and iChat. Both of us have other friends that we can chat with using this software, and indeed do so all the time. But for reasons we can't figure, we can't resolve this unique problem between the two of us.

Here's the basic Y!M scenario:
I can see him when he's logged in to Y!M, but he can't see me. I can send him a message when he's logged in, which he receives, reads, and replies to, which I never get. He can't send me anything, apparently. On- or offline.

The iChat scenario is simpler:
Although we've both added each other as buddies, I can't see him, he can't see me. Even when we're both logged in. I have sent him offline messages which he never gets.

We have tried everything we can think of including changing Appletalk settings, running Fire (which worked when I had trouble with Y!M and another friend), changing firewall settings. Everything that seemed to be addressable for the problem and nothing has changed. Not even improved or made worse.

What else can I say but....HELP!!!!!

Yeah, we've thought of the invisible and ignore options. I've tried the web interface for Y!M, but not the aol one. Which is definitely an option, but seems like only a band-aid solution. It seems like there should be some some other rational solution, since it only seems to happen between the two of us...

My instinct tells me the firewall/appletalk/etc settings are key, but as I've said, we've tried everything we could thnk of there.

I don't think it has something to do with firewall or other network settings. You said it's working fine for you with other ppl and for him as well. Just when it comes to the two of you..
That sounds very much like invisible or ignor list.. Trying webinterface of those messengers is a nice proof that it's no network problem. However, how is the url of the webinterface for Yahoo? Didn't know there is one...
Did you two repair permissions and kinda trash the plist files for yahoo and ichat? Just a desperate step which should be the very last you two try.

Right. Ok. Well, on the strength of the previous suggestion, I mentioned it to him. Let's just say that where Y!M is concerned, we've fixed the problem. I'm not going to say who, but one of us was an idiot... :o

Still. Now that I've started going down this path, I'd really like to know why iChat is just completely not working. I'm going to try the web interface for aol, and see how it goes...

(thanks for your patience so far...and your 'welcome'!)
