Tropico - the worst Mac OS X port ever!

I just bought Tropico for the Mac today, and I am very disappointed. Despite having a machine far more powerful than the requirements, the game is simply unplayable. The animation is choppy (even with all the options turned off), and the game paused every other minute as if thinking. It's an absolute piece of cr*p!

I've downloaded the latest patch, and it does nothing.

Does anyone have any hints on making Tropico playable on Mac OS X?

and i thought it was me... i enjoyed the game save for the same reasons
you mentioned. i downloaded the demo and found that after about
10-15 years have elapsed that the game was downright nearly
unplayable.
