Tweak Internet Connection?

At times my internet connection is s..t and the rest of the time it's OK. Is there any way that I can tweak it to the max?

I have WISP from gci.net and connect wirelessly to a Linksys WRT54G v5 that I just updated to the latest firmware, which is wired to a PC.

iStumbler shows a signal of 43 and noise at 12 even if I'm in the same room as the router with nothing in between.

My router can't Ping but my PB G4 could and the numbers are high at times.

--- macosx.com ping statistics ---
20 packets transmitted, 19 packets received, 5% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 717.941/800.549/1273.142/128.784 ms

I've called support at GCI but didn't get much help from the tech I talked to.

I would appreciate any help on tweaking my internet connection.

There is no reason for it to be that slow. Is there another computer that uses the wireless that also gets the same problem?

If you don't have another computer on the network that uses wireless, then try to see if you can get a friend to come over with his/her laptop and try it out. If that user doesn't have a problem then its your laptop, if they do, then its the wireless.

Could be bad hardware. If it really bugs you, wired will give the the fastest network (especially if you have gigabit..).

Our Internet connection is back up after being off for a few weeks. GCI finally admitted that the problem is on their end and there is nothing wrong with our hardware.

Thanks.
