It's the owner:group permission of the file. Log in your iPhone via SSH and type this: cd /var/mobile/Library/SMS press Return, then: chown mobile:mobile -R * press Return. All SMS content is now owned by mobile user.

Fixed. Owner was root:mobile. Set to mobile:mobile, now all works again.
