This won't happen in OS X, and probably not XP. This is a myth.
Idle applications aren't allocated resources like they are under Mac OS 9... 100 idle applications are not going to bog you down the way they would under 9 - just a very small footprint.
As with all the Mac OS X releases we've had, 10.1 is Apple's way of saying "here's what we've got done so far"... there is a lot of evidence that some of the features currently in it are not 100% complete. That doesn't mean they'll never be complete.
What makes you say that speed is everything? Just because when you click "ok" on a Photoshop filter and are able to complete that task in .5 seconds less does not make you more productive.

Maybe the PC in which you were running Flash had a faster video card? Maybe browser plug-ins in general worked better on the browser you had on the PC?
Flash came from Director if I'm not mistaken, and I believe Director was originally a Mac program. I don't buy your statements.
Why don't you stop and really think about what you are saying before you write? I mean that in a completely unflamatory way (although I guess it doesn't sound it.. better words escape me). There *are* improvements across the entire product line, and dual 800's *will* do things faster...
The SMB client is present and has worked for me... I have heard reports saying that it hasn't worked well (or at all) for some people, but I just thought I'd point out in response to "where is smb support" that it *is* there.
As far as your speed complaints, anything specific?
re: checkbox for clicking on files in a dialog box? What would you call this option if you were Apple?

re: file dialog box: what if you're browsing through a directory and accidently replace a file you don't mean to? More abstractions are not good to new users.. just because you are used to this doesn't make it superior...
