Anyone know how to adjust the Vitual Memory Page Files?

I don't know how VM really works for everything else, but for IRIX another UNIX flavor, here's a summary. When coder/developers creates an application/binary... they usually reserve the maximum memory needed for the application to run. So when you run the application it goes out and mark...

Anyone know how to adjust the Vitual Memory Page Files?

I was about to post a question on this. Apple should atleast have that hidden option somewhere for advance tweaking. When osX was first release, I've even have reserve partition space just for the swap partition! :( too bad I haven't found a way to do it yet. Well I've also haven't really...

is osx a true unix system

Sorry, guys... I wasn't aware that this thread has grown to 6 pages! ack. The quote was only there because sometime earlier there was a comparision between Unix, OSX, and Linux... It was one of the earlier posts when someone had a friend who said OSX isn't Unix like Linux... etc etc...

is osx a true unix system

here's a hands down proof Linux is not UNIX... quote from: http://www.linux.org ... Linux is a free Unix-type operating system originally created by Linus Torvalds with the assistance of developers around the world. Developed under the GNU General Public License , the source code for...

When do we get some WINE?

Actually, you may not need to run linux. There's several beta GNU software out there, that you can probably compile or port to darwin or Xdarwin... DVD players are one of them, but it wont use hardware acelleration. There's also some GNU CD burners... that might work under Darwin. Damn...

is osx a true unix system

powemacuser, there is no unix kernel. System V would be the last known true unix. IRIX, SunOS/Solaris, AIX, Linux, BSD, etc... has kernals that inherit the characteristics of a Unix kernal. They are not true Unix. I don't even believe a true Unix OS exist anymore. Linux was built...

is osx a true unix system

I agree with vihung, Where I work, it is accepted that no moderm OS is UNIX anymore. However whe we refer to an OS as UNIX, we do not genuinely mean true UNIX. To save the sake of argument and confusion... we know that we rally meant it is UNIX "compatible" or Posix compliant. Solars...

is osx a true unix system

I'm no genius and I know I still have a lot to learn. But I've always been a defender of OSes and even Windows. When a IRIX admin bashes, Windows I defend it. When a window user bashes Linux I defend linux. and so on and so on... Hell I defend Apple OS9 too... even though i still think it's...

    BBEdit instead of vi

I find myself (dont hit me) more of a pico person. I'm acquinted with VI, but I find it annoying. As for a gui solution, I find OSX textedit quite good. :] Used BBedit on OS9 and earlier. For some reason I didnt really like it. Maybe because it was an overpriced text editor. :X...

When do we get some WINE?

Well Connectix (reference from www.connectix.com) said VPC for OSX should be do out this summer, maybe around July. I'm waiting patiently for it. Maybe we can run Linux and actually play DVDs under it, since Apple is taking freaking long to unlease a DVD player. Damn, I hate dual booting...

I can understand the many issues upon having finder run as root... also with other things running as root. Best bet, if you're a REAL hacker trying to hack the system as you please, then you also understand all the risk and consequences of it. PArt of it is screwing up your system to a...

Password Vulnerability in new OS X Versions?

Aaaahh I'm not sure which build I have, I haven't even checked. Sorry for not being die-hard macosx enough. I haven't used macosX public beta yet since it's useless at the level. But I discover that root password is the same as the first user password. Upon installng MacOSX public...

    virtual pc for carbon

I'm not sure if I misread it, but it will be cool if you can Windows Binaries similar to Classic Binaries on X. Which is doable. There is vmware for linux and some others that lets win32apps to run on top of linux and not needing an install of Windows. If VPC for X can do this, you...
