agreed, have the person sending you these files export them from CS or CS2 as a illustrator legacy file then have them set the file either as a ai or eps and then have them save to a lower version.

check your page setup settings and make sure that they are set to a correct size. a correct size meaning that if you are using 8.5"x11" paper, setup your page to be that size. then when back in the document check your page tiling and see if your document fits within the dotted lines of the page...

i agree with macGizmo, if you do not know how to log in as a root user you have to go into your applications folder, then in there go into the utilities folder. open up netinfo manager, and from the menu above goto security then "enable root user" (you might have to setup a password) log out...
