tiger running SO SLOW on G4 powebook

I am going to try this tonight--this is EXACTLY what i was thinking. i hope it works! I am only (right now) concerned about doing this for the folder on the backup, which is panther. So, logged into panther, running with the panther backup as my startup disk: So I drag the folder, on the...

tiger running SO SLOW on G4 powebook

When i initially manually copied these folders over to update them, it was from Tiger, while i was logged into Tiger, onto the panther backup. I copied it over as a backup, but Tiger got so slow i had to go back to panther...and when i did, the folders seemed to have lost their sense of self...

yeah, unfortunately i already tried that. It isn't going to work from within the applications...i think, kind of like permissions, maybe there is some way of making the folders and files "realize" that they belong to the current harddrive. Like when we used to rebuild the desktop?

Thanks. Actually the newer versions do have an option to check the current folder for other links and that works, but I have a bunch of files like that. I am actually a freehand pro. And it isn't just freehand, it is other applications like eudora as well. What i was hoping is that, since...

Thanks, i am gradually trying to get all the right stuff copied over, while working 12 hr+ days. I really appreciate it, and the more info the better as far as i am concerned. I am still running off my pather firewire drive backup for working, which is a little scary. Flying Meat (or anyone)...

tiger running SO SLOW on G4 powebook

sorry, I posted an update yesterday AM while in the newly installed tiger system and I see that it didn't post! Flying Meat, your unix magic worked perfectly, thank you! I fixed the path so that it is the normal (newly installed) user folder, I was too scared to try the remote user folder...

tiger running SO SLOW on G4 powebook

Flying Meat, thank you! it worked perfectly. I used the commands you gave to restore my user folder to the newly installed one (too scared to mess with the paths again). i copied the contents of my "real" user folder over to the new one, except that i didn't copy very many fonts, and i tried...

i thought about that, but, i had repaired permissions before the install...i don't know. it is all the mysteries of unix, to me.

can, and does. I have another question, semi-related. Right now, in order to get work done, I am using my original backup, on a firewire drive, in panther. I had to copy some folders of my recent work (mostly freehand files, linked graphics. also eudora email and linked attachments)...

thanks. i really appreciate it--i will that. can't do it until tonight, probably, but i will try it. this is turning into a windows-like experience. i haven't had anything like this happen in all my many, many years using macs (and apple before that). jennie

tiger running SO SLOW on G4 powebook

i am in a desktop environment, because i am running from a bootable backup of my old panther system. Which, btw, works great. no issues as all. anyway, i can open the harddrive, look at the folders, they don't appear to be locked. I just don't anything about the "command lines" or how to the...

tiger running SO SLOW on G4 powebook

okay, guys, now i am in deep. i backed up, erased the hard drive, and did a clean install, no migration. did a sys update, ran the 10.4.8 combo update (and everything else). It was hard to test how well it was working, given that it had no apps, but there was no obvious slowdown. So i...

tiger running SO SLOW on G4 powebook

No, it's not confusing, thanks. #5 was a previous suggestion from Lt Major Burns, he was saying that if i changed paths, tested my user stuff out with the clean install, and it was OK, then I could copy it all over and then correct the path... So for #7, rather than copy the whole folder...

tiger running SO SLOW on G4 powebook

okay, all i had time for over the weekend was to fix the font problem by copying over with the backup set, and backing up the new user files (all my work this week!) into the tiger backup. I am going to make sure I am understanding. Although I did a clean install before, the problem may have...

tiger running SO SLOW on G4 powebook

So you are saying that the clean install that i did...didn't take? Or that the migration assistant migrated things over poorly? I guess i don't get how me, manually copying stuff over, as opposed to using the migration assistant, is going to change anything? I am still going to need to copy over...
