big snag. The developer's tools were not preinstalled. I hoped they would be, but I can see that the system is much more secure without them. If you want to use them you should probably know how to get them.
i just installed the gm version today. very nice. there are a couple of quirks but mostly it's great. definitely faster than the beta and previous builds. airport mostly works. quicktime 5 looks good. no itunes, no imovie, no music player. the system wide spell checker is still there but now...
I agree with most of the previous posts. Mac OS X is a really good and usable Unix. The gui is the most advanced I've seen on a mainstream OS. The Unix underbelly is also very good, but right now is a little raw. Some files are incomplete for OS X, and compiling apps sometimes takes a little...
I hope that a year from now all of this debate is irrelevant. I don't want to run classic on OS X, much less windows. I think that Apple is genius for providing the classic transition, but I personally hate it. I don't want to need classic to be productive. I really don't want to run windows to...
Although it would be nice to have a Word alternative, I've never really thought that staroffice was very good. It is slow, unresponsive and the UI is horrid. For now I'll stick to emacs or rtf.
Space .6 is now out, and he's cleaned it up a little. It has allowed me to clean up my windows a bit, but the fact that I can't have multiple instances of an app open across different desktops does make it more limited than multiple desktops in X11.
I've also emailed the author suggesting...
Yep, it looks pretty good so far. Does anybody know if it takes advantage of muli-processors? I know that theoretically it should, but have not yet experienced first-hand.
Yeah, I've been very happy with the new version of omniweb, but the lack of css is sometimes problematic. I'm sure they'll iron it out though.
I really like that the emacs commands (at least some) are bound into it (cocoa is definitely cool). It makes filling out forms such as macosx message...
I have used most of the major flavors of unix, and have so far preferred OS X. Linux is very fine, and has many applications ported for it. It works very well for a desktop system. My major gripe is the interface. It is very clunky and not at all attractive to look at. I look forward to what the...
I started a thread in the Unix Newbie forum for OS X Security. There are instructions on how to install and configure saint and nmap, and also links to firewall configuration instructions.

Also don't forget about using apachectl from the command line. It will let you start, stop, and do a quick reload of apache faster than going in through the system preferences panel.
PHP has to be configured into apache. As far as I can see there is no way yet to have apache run with dynamic modules/apxs. Once this is done it will be very easy to add other modules such as php, mod_perl etc.
Someone has packaged some precompiled binaries of Apache with PHP, and MySQL for...
Also, if you check out the Security thread in the Unix Newbie forum there are a few posts regarding Saint and nmap, which may help in your decisions about which ports to close with ipfw.
hmmm. weird. I've only been able to use .jpg's. But they some have looked really bad depending on the resolution of the monitor settings. The quality has been inconsistent with different settings too. Sometimes it looks better with more colors, and sometimes better with fewer, even at the same...
I've noticed that sometimes when I download files that they don't appear right away. I have to open up Sherlock, find the file, and then drag the icon that is displayed in Sherlock for the file over to the window or desktop where the downloaded file should be. The file then magically appears...
