Hi again,
Managed to startup in OF by pressing the mod keys at startup! Ran the 3 commands you stated and then succeeded in starting up in single user mode and running Applejack maintenance app from single user mode.
So, for now at least, it seems to be back to normal. Doesn't fill me with...
Hi again, finally got a set of 10.4 install disks and ran the Open Firmware Password App setting it to "password". At this point on restarting the mac, it wouldn't startup normally at all. I held the power button in for an age hoping it would boot into OF which it finally did - much to my...
I run 7 G5 2.7GHz Powerpcs (1GHz ram) and 10.4.6 in a music tech lab.
The main teaching machine now refuses to boot into single user mode or any other mode requiring modifying keys at startup.
I think the problem is an open firmware one, I did manage to boot into open firmware once and did...
Hi Bob,
Yes I tried this already as well! Seems like I've been around the houses.
The startup disks may have gone to a previous IT manager - it's one of the hassles of being in a college - I'm in charge of what I do but new gear gets handed over in the first instance to the IT team. I've been...

As to the power button issue, I've refound the article I quoted from above...
Thanks again DeltaMac,
Sadly, I can't use any key modifiers on startup - so no chance to zap the pram as you describe.
Holding the power on button in should eventually take you to the Open Firmware prompt (black letters on white screen).
I can't remember where I read this which is annoying as...
Hi DeltaMac,
Seems unlikely - given that holding the power button in isn't even making it go to OF. It's the original keyboard, but I will of course try one of the other keyboards in the lab for a stab at it.
Booting to Apple Hardware Test? Does that involved using the original OSX install...
Having problems booting a G5 dual 2.7GHz machine into anything other than OSX (10.4.6).
i.e., I can't boot with any modifying keys down.
I want to run Applejack from 'single user mode' but cmd-s won't work.
I already booted into Open Firmware via holding in the power button till OF appeared...
