How Can I Change Folder Icons

Never mind. Seems I didn't know about the easiest change *ever*. For any others that may not know, just open the Get Info window, click on the icon in the upper left corner (you'll see a faint blue outline) and hit Delete. The default icon is restored.

How Can I Change Folder Icons

Using Tiger, I had updated a few folder icons using the copy/paste method in the Get Info window. They looked fine and they worked fine. Now that I've installed Leopard, though, they look terrible because they're completely different in every way from Leopard's default. My plan is/was to...

Unexpected Results from who and w

Just out of curiosity the other day, I ran "w" from my terminal. I was surprised to see that, even though there was someone else logged in (with user switching turned on) only my login was registered. I went on to discover that only my terminal session was registering. My actual login to the...

How do you manage your passwords

I use 1Passwd and KeePassX. Both quite good, while 1Passwd excels for online passwords. A great click-saver when coupled with AllBookmarks.

    OSX and VPN

I connect to my Win-based VPN on a regular basis. No problems. I often choose to do so in my WinXP virtual machine in order to use Outlook's calendaring integration, etc. but if I don't need that feature, I'll usually just connect via the Mac itself.

Is there a way to show hidden files in Finder?

This is a really clean solution: http://theappleblog.com/2007/04/30/quick-tip-showhide-hidden-files/ I've written shell scripts to show and hide, but have never wired them to Automator. Now that I've seen this, I'll be doing that tonight.

Also want to switch but have questions

    1. I've never had any trouble accessing my external NTFS drives, but they're all networked rather than connected. 2. I use NeoOffice (a native mac port of OOo) and it works great with MS Office formatted files. I don't do a lot of that kind of stuff, but I've never had any trouble at all...

    WinZip Equivalent

I do like the compression capability and love the ability to compress from a right-click, but I want the ability to inspect an existing archive without extracting it. The built-in tool just doesn't do that, as far as I can tell.

    WinZip Equivalent

Thanks for the link. I've tried one or two alternatives from MacUpdate, but they didn't offer the inspection capability. I also read feeds from MacUpdate and VersionTracker, but haven't seen anything else. From your link, though, it looks like BetterZip might be a winner. Thanks again.

    Switching: PC to Mac

That does sound like a strong system. I don't know of anywhere that you can trade-in your PC for an analogous Mac. In my limited experience (I only switched a few months ago), the worlds of Mac and PC are pretty segregated. Very few (if any) places deal in both. It's not like trading in a...

    WinZip Equivalent

Increasingly, I've been running across the need to open a zipped archive without necessarily extracting it. I just want to inspect the contents. With WinZip, ZipGenius, etc. I'm able to do that on my Windows machines, but I can't seem to find something like that for OS X. I hope I'm just...

    Using locate in OS X

I don't actually get error, per se. Just the usage display as though "locate foo" didn't fit the "locate pattern" format. I do have locate aliased to "locate -i" (a carry over from my .tcshrc file on linux, but removing that alias changes nothing.

    Using locate in OS X

This is driving me crazy. I'm a regular user of locate on my unix boxes, but in OS X it behaves differently in a number of ways. I've created an alias (I use tcsh, in case it matters later) "updatedb" for "sudo /usr/libexec/locate.updatedb" and not that works similarly. I've also installed a...

Mac Pro Users Feedback on Parallels?

I have a MBP with 2Gb of RAM. I run WinXP via Parallels on a separate desktop (VirtueDesktops). I keep the Windows machine up pretty much all the time although I used it sparingly and for only a few tasks (financial stuff, software testing). Works great. No noticeable impact on my day-to-day...

How to query ssh/scp password from GUI?

You couldn't set it up or you set it up and it didn't work? I included a troubleshooting hint for an issue I bumped into. Open the authorized_keys file on the remote server and look at the public key you added. At the end you'll see user@host. Change the host name to the IP address and see...
