    Annoying Stickies problem

Hi all, I greatly appreacieate this site. It's a great resource for Mac users. Stickies questions: I just figured out how to have Stickies startup at boot-time using System Preferences. This works. My four stickies show up after each reboot. However, I have two minor issues. One, a...

    Weird wireless router problem

Sounds like you have two network interfaces on the PC? That would mean two IP's and that adds a lot of extra complexity. Do you need two different network connections? Are they on separate networks?

    Weird wireless router problem

Can you ping the gateway? What IP address are you using for both the PC and the Mac.

    Home Recording

I'm looking for versatile home recording software. On the PC I have been using Adobe Audition for a couple of years. It's great at dealing with loops and audio editing. Basically, I'm looking for software that is a few "steps up" from Garage Band. What is the recording software most...

    Weird wireless router problem

You must get past this point. My guess would be that the XP machine has it's firewall turned on. If thats the case, ping will fail. This is not a problem. As long as you can ping the mac from XP you are good. Your next step would be to turn on file sharing for one of the folders on the PC...

    Weird wireless router problem

I've only owned my Mac for three days (first Mac!), but here is what I did and it was all working in less than 5 minutes. I have two machines behind a wirelss firewall. My XP desktop and my PowerBook (10.3.4). Since I know XP much better than Os X, all I did was turn on file sharing for a...

Is it possible to save a WEP password?

When I first signed on to my wireless network, my PB asked me if I wanted to add the password to the "key ring." I haven't been asked since. But that was only two days ago...

    /etc/hosts

I've been using a strict hosts file on Unix machines for years as a cheap and safe way to block adds. Here is an example of what I'm talking about... http://someonewhocares.org/hosts/ Os X has an /etc/hosts file... But I have a suspicion that I probably shouldn't muck with that. Whats...

locking the desktop + networking in simple finder

Why not give the kids their own account? This is probably the right way to go for more reasons than just desktop management.

Alternative office suites for OS X

Yes, you are quite correct. The look and feel of OOo does not come close to the Mac standard. I see that now as I learn to used my new computer. I guess I'm too used to the ugly X11 interface. On Unix machines (at least in the past) Function was EVERYTHING and things like ease-of-use, and...

Alternative office suites for OS X

OOo stands for OpenOffice.org (Free, Open Source) Just bought my first Mac today, a G4 PowerBook, and love it. I'm a Unix admin by trade to I'm finding the switch very painless. OpenOffice is great, works on many platforms. I've been using it for years on Linux and Solaris. Has no...
