1- Unplug everything from the back except the power, keyboard, mouse and monitor.
2- Restart holding alt
you should then see you HD click it and then run disk utility once booted.
3- Remove boot camp. Everything was fine with my machine once i did this.

I've managed to successfully update the firmware and remove the Windows partition. Obviously I understand quitting before the firmware has fully installed is generally a no no but if the machine hadn't got past the 5% mark after 12+ hours I did feel I had no other option.
