Thanks, I'm obviously pretty stupid at Mac. Another quick question - when I buy the upgrade and install it ... will I lose everything I have on my Mac today?

I'm trying to upgrade the operating system on my G4 and after downloading OSX 10.4.11 I got a message that it couldn't be installed on my computer. could someone please help me with the steps to make the upgrade successful? Many thanks!
