Thank you for your comments. I'm afraid I have to stay with 10.2.8 for the time being so installing stuffit 8 is still the problem.

I'm using a Mac OSX.2.8 and have had Stuffit standard 8.0.2. for ages uninstalled. So now I suddenly need to use it and have rediscovered why I didn't install when I got it. In the 'read me' document, it highly recommends downloading the free updates from Apple (when using OS10.2 or OS10 .3) but...
