I appear to have things working now with ThunderBird 0.6. I started over. Installed ThunderBird 0.5 Re-created all three previous accounts manually. Copy/pasted the mail & other settings from underneath each account that was backed up - over the new mail & settings underneath each...

iPhoto uses the datetime from the backup, not from the EXIF information contained within the JPEG file ... which causes all these duplicates. Thought of iPhoto Diet as well ... only, I think that's only geared at removing the standard iPhoto backkups of originals of every file you touched up...
