I managed to get this resolved and for the benefit of anyone else with similar problems, disconnecting EVERYTHING from the Macmini for 30 seconds, then just the power cable and start up, then power down again, reconnect everything and away it went. The problem has not so far reappeared.

If i leave my computer for more than an hour it locks up completely requiring a restart each time. Even the clock stops. I have also noticed that frequently the clock and the network display disappears from the bar top left of screen. I reset these to display in system pref and click the padlock...
