What's your all time favorite OS?

Of the choices given, I like X the best. For special niches some others were fun. RT-11 was good for a small computer. A small computer in those days had 28k words of program space of which about 4k words were used by the OS. (Total space for peripheral addressing and programs was 64kbytes.)...

    What Was OpenDoc?

Haven't heard about OpenDoc in a while. It was a good concept. I recall reading some years back that there was a three way partnership behind it. Apple, IBM(?) and one other company. When they got to the point where some milestone was supposed to be met it turned out the third partner had not...

    iPod

The iPod is actually not bad. It is priced the same as a portable FW HD of the same capacity. Look at it that way and the MP3 player is free! After looking at the video I was more impressed with it. It commands a premium price because of the small size and the convenience factor. Finally...

    No optical in/output on iPod!?

I think the idea is to get your data with your Mac then download via FW. Digital optical audio is not standard with Macs but you can get boards or PC cards which will accept digital optical streams from digital audio gear. Haven't tried it personally.

very slow file transfer from OSX to win2000

I've seen variations in login speed and transfer rates among different combinations of machines. We are still at the start of the learning curve with OS X. One G4 I have connecting to an NT box seems to go quickly enough. Haven't timed it.

    10.1 New and Hidden Features

Not really hidden but easy to overlook. Select an open folder in the finder. Select Show View Options (cmnd-J) under the View menu. At the bottom of the panel there is an option for choosing a background picture for this folder (like desktop pictures). Aside from having simple photographs I've...

iMovie to VCD: Is there a Faster Way?

Simple, but unfortunate, answer is to use faster computers. It's just a guess but I'll bet you could cut the encoding time by a factor of five with the newest G4. Some comparable measurements. My Pismo 500 encodes MP3s with iTunes at just under 4x. Someone posted that their new G4 did it...

Bring back Type and Creator codes

One big frustration in OS X is the loss of Type and Creator codes. It seems you can optionally attach them but the OS doesn't use them. This is a great feature. I use it a lot. In OS 9 I have various Apple Scripts to control these codes as I need to. On the other hand, the use of extensions...

Bring back the Users and Groups control panel

"This makes it impossible to set up a system under OS X where, for example, your colleages could add/modify files in a folder, while clients could access the same folder, but not modify files. " Just a thought, could you put an alias of the folder your colleagues write to into the clients...

    Dvd-rw

You can find some reports on successful use of DVD-RW in OS X here: http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/OSX/OS_X_10.1/OS_X_DVD_RW_support.html

!!! FireWire is able to share files

Yeah, works great, really fast, easy. This has been popular on power books for a long time. It used to work with SCSI and with the newer 'books it works with Firewire. Did this work with a tower or cube as the target device? I was getting about 7 or 8 MB/sec actual throughput. This was...

    Play VCD use quick player

I don't have the links handy. I heard there was an issue with X 10.1 reading the VCD format. You might try FreeVCD or QT from Classic (is that possible?). The other alternative would be to just go to OS 9, copy the relevent files to your HD then you can view them from X as often as you like. I...

AppleScript in the Finder in 10.1 (Spring-Loaded Folders???)

My guess is that they just carried this over from the OS 9 finder dictionary. Not Available yet means that they haven't had a chance to change this yet. Anything on the page could be changed. As you pointed out, if you look at many items you find the Not Available yet warning. Also, if you...

    Do you use DVD?

We occaisionally watch DVDs on the iMac or with the PB attached to a TV. However, I just got a Quicksilver with a Cinema Display for use at my office. I tried watching Gladiator on this and it was fantastic. Apple should advertise a setup like this in the high end video shops just as a DVD...

    Dvd-rw

According to xlr8.com and other posts the superdrive can do DVD-RW but Apple doesn't officially support it. I think they are concerned that it may be a temporary format and don't want to be stuck supporting it for a long time. However, people say they can read and write them with the standard OS...

    OSX Browser!

I loved Cyberdog. In its prime everything worked so well. I still can't find an email program that was as nice to use. I clung to it until it no longer worked with the more recent versions of Mac OS. Based on CD I had great expectations for Mail in OS X but those hopes were dashed.

Stupid question about where to put stuff

I made one folder for aliases which I keep on my desktop. When I add an application or have a frequently used document I put an alias to it in this folder. Easiest way to do this is to hold down command-option then click and drag the icon to the other folder. Now it takes two clicks to open...

speed of connecting on a local network

Just curious. Does anyone know why it takes so long to connect from OS X to another computer? If I connect to an OS X computer from OS 9 it goes quickly. If I connect from X to either X or 9 I get a spinning cursor for 60s or so till the dialogs appear. After that things are normal. Is this the...
