MAC won't advance to login screen from APPLE logo

I had similar problem on my Macbook pro (OS X 10.5.5): I could log in, but instead of showing my normal desktop picture, the startup picture was shown and then the login screen came back. I found following url, that helped: Fixing a Mac OSX Leopard Login Loop Caused by Launch Services. The idea...

    dont know what im doing

Normally when you download a OS X program, it is distributed as a .dmg file. Those files are disk images (you can make your own with Disk Utility), that when opened work like any other disk. Safari (and most other web browsers) open the disk image automatically when downloaded, but you can open...

    Directory not empty

I was about to suggest restarting (it helped me on a similar case), but it was on your list. Have you checked what the file (files) is with ls -lsa ? If you find a file, you could try $ls -lsai $find . -inum 12345 -exec rm '{}' \; where 12345 is the number on the weird file's line...

    Is My MacBook Pro Sick?

I found one problem: we have two wlans on the company I work: one for the workers and another for the quests. The worker wlan needs the MAC address plus password, the quest wlan needs only password. For both wlans, the MBP lost its connection (normally, it used which ever of the wlans was free)...

    Is My MacBook Pro Sick?

I turned up my MBP Tuesday and the screen was totally blank. I tried the normal stuff: removed the battery, cleared the parameter RAM; nothing. I phoned the store and they adviced me to phone Apple. They guy at Apple gave me another trick: remove the power cord, battery and press the power...

    Graphical Drivers on VMware Fusion

Move the mouse to the top of the screen (I assume you use the full screen mode). There should come VMWare menus. Select "install VM tools". Depending on the operating system (and settings on it), a CD-ROM appears and the tools is set, or only the CD-ROM appears.

    USB-stick problem

Most likely there are some Finder files, that tell where the files were etc. If you are fluent in Unix, use to view the hidden files. You can delete them using rm command. BTW: I have a USB stick I use also to transfer files between Windows and OS X. I did not see the extra files, until I...

    Jaz drive noisy

I had two Jaz cartridges. The one was so noisy I had to leave the room when I took backups. The other was fine. One had black, plastic kind of back and the other was metallic. I think the metallic was the noisy one. But other than the noise, they worked fine.

    ExpressCard/34 Issues with MBP

I have SD reader on my MBP's ExpressCard/34. I use it to transfer pictures from my Canon EOS 450D. Previously I had CF reader on my Powerbook PRO and the SD reader seems to be almost hundred times faster. Of course, MBP itself is faster than Powerbook.

    Very Slow Bootup

I have a game DVD (Civilization IV) on my MBP all the time. The driver started to have read problems, so it took quite a long time for my Mac to boot (I guess it had to be sure there was no bootable OS on the disk). I bought a cleaner disk, which helped.

    VMware Fusion 2.0 released

Is there way to use the Unity so that Vista widget sidebar is not shown as one large window? Either as each widget as its own window, or better yet, no widgets at all.

TextEdit can't open its own file.

Well that is RTF, so Textedit created what it claimed. But why did it not notice that it is RTF, I don't know. Are you storing the files to some external disk that does some funny text file conversion?

What is a Unix Executable File? Why is it doing this?

Problem is (more or less) obvious: Unix programs are 1. Files that do not have extension (or they are named "a.out", but since there can be only one a.out, they are either renamed or compiled already using a different name) 2. They have execution ("x") mode on, which means they can be run...

    3rd Party Drivers?

Macs do not have BIOS (but EFI). It might be that the installation tried to add some stuff to the bios (for authentication support) and since it did not find any, it halted.

    Parallels help...

nixbeek: Are you sure about Service Pack 2? At least for VMWare Fusion I could install WIndows XP with no SPs. And speaking of Fusion: you can download images from VMWare's website for several OSs with different programs already installed. The OSs are frees (Linux etc.), but they are fine if...
