messed up computer (10.9.3) after migration to SSD - permissions or java problem?

No, I am not saying erase anything. I gather that /Library/Receipts/ was copied along with everything else from your old HDD. I am, however, even more skeptical about your diagnosis of permissions problems. Earlier this year, I had cause to replace a Power Mac G5 with a compatible model. The...

messed up computer (10.9.3) after migration to SSD - permissions or java problem?

Permissions are not some magic file attributes that are damaged for mysterious reasons or that require incantations to repair. Each application's permissions settings are maintained in the /Library/Receipts/ folder by the.pkg bundle that was created when the application was installed. To repair...

    The new 10.10 Yosemite

OS X Mavericks was also free. Previous versions went for $20, not exactly a price requiring a payday loan. It appears that Mavericks signaled a new era in OS X that was only hinted at by switching from cats to California locales. I am blown away by the changes in Yosemite and the implications...

    obscure login icon

There are many more characters in most fonts than your computer has keys to map them into. Most of those characters can be accessed by pressing sequences of multiple keys. It appears that your swiffer inadvertently pressed the correct sequence of keys to display the character(s) in your login...

Spinning Beach Ball in Finder every few minutes ?!

And another thing--it sounds like you have added a substantial number of files to your hard drive. Be sure to maintain at least 10% of your hard drive capacity as free space.

    Challenges with Apple Mail auto-complete

I have several Macs. Mail auto-complete works without issue on all of them. Auto complete of email addresses in Address Book and received and sent messages should just work. There is nothing special about AOL accounts.

Safari hijack? "updateplayer.us" demanding to be installed!

You are probably in error. There is a lot of Internet between Photobucket.com and your computer. SPAMMING is much more sophisticated now that it used to be. Google Ads has helped Google become one of the largest companies on Earth using a business model that most users don't even know exist...

Local network name for non-computer device.

You are going all around Job's barn for nothing. Your printer supports Bonjour. All of your Macs support Rendezvous/Bonjour. If you have Windows machines on the network, then you may install Bonjour for Windows on your Windows computers.

    MTRP Doesn't Recognize Files

The latest release version of Mac the Ripper is MTR 2.6.6. Most public links to subsequent versions of MTR take you to Mac DVDRipper Pro, a completely different application. There is a ripper that is supposed to be a subsequent version of MTR known as MTR 4, currently at MTR 4.2.7. It is not...

    MTRP Doesn't Recognize Files

The latest version of Mac the Ripper is MTR 2.6.6. It is abandonware. There has been talk about another developer's taking over MTR, but I don't think that anything has ever come of it. Google searches for Mac the Ripper and Mac the Ripper Pro inevitably hit ripping utilities from other...

    Has Mavericks killed iMovie HD?

Isn't the whole reason that you are here is because iMovie HD doesn't work?

    Has Mavericks killed iMovie HD?

iMovie on my computer is iMovie 10.0.2, four versions newer than yours. Is there any particular reason that you are holding on to such antediluvian software?

    "Return Address" Label maker

This is a task for almost every word processing application including Word and Pages. It is also a task for low-brow publishing applications like The Print Shop. I had been using The Print Shop. However, The Print Shop makes it extremely difficult to move mail merge databases from computer to...

    Turn off Mac at night?

To amplify Cheryl's point, she is talking about the Periodic Tasks. As she accurately pointed out, they are designed to be performed late at night when all good people are safe in bed. However, Apple no longer requires that they be performed late at night. Although it is preferred that you...

    Printer problem- filter fails- PDFs

I am certain that you issue is not "PDF files," but PDF files from certain sources. The workaround is to print as image. You did not say which application from which you are trying to print your PDF files. "Print as Image" is a feature of Adobe Acrobat Pro and Adobe Reader.
