    Apple Mail "vacation"

You do understand that your email client has to first receive your messages before it can respond to them. In order for Mail to send out an automated response, your would have to leave your computer on, your account logged-on, and Mail running.

    scanner crashes all apps!

In July 2011, Canon released updated MacOS X 10.4-compatible software for the CanoScan LiDE110. Have you installed it?

    My hard drive just vanished

Let's not go off the deep end here. Apple does not manufacture hard drives. Hard drives are mechanical parts. Mechanical parts fail. It is the nature of the beast. If your MacBook's hard drive failed within weeks after purchase, then it failed with months left on the warranty. You did not even...

Sounds like you need a new hard drive.

    Mac not connecting to SpeedStream

To be clear, be sure that both computers are setup to acquire their IP addresses via DHCP. You may assign unique permanent IP addresses to each, but there is no advantage to doing that behind your own router. Whatever you do you to one computer, you should to the other. Else you run the risk of...

    internet trouble

gsahli had already satisfied me that your version of Safari was up-to-date for Tiger. Following his post, I checked my own and found that I have the same Safari receipts that you have. The version of Safari is clearly not the problem. This is a real head-scratcher. Your browser doesn't...

For the time being restore the .pkg receipt file to its previous location. How many Safari receipt files do you have and what are their names?

    internet trouble

Don't uninstall anything. Go into your global Library folder. Locate the Receipts folder inside. Here, you will find a .pkg receipt file for every version of every application that you ever installed on your computer. Drag Safari4.1.3Tiger.pkg to your Desktop. Rerun Software Update.

Brand New Macbook Pro 17's on ebay ??

They can't. The computers are refurbished, stolen, or fakes. If it seems too good to be true, then it is not true.

    internet trouble

As for Flip4Mac, you will find a link to download Flip4Mac 2.3.8.1 on the developer's website. As for your version of Safari, your System Profile clearly shows that you have Safari 3.0.4 installed. Do you know of anything that can account for this discrepancy?

    internet trouble

Two things jump out at me: You appear to still be using Windows Media Player 7. Microsoft has abandoned it and recommends that you use Flip4Mac instead. You are still using Safari 3.0.4. Although you have MacOSX 10.4.11, you probably do not have the latest patches. You should run Software...

    internet trouble

Those images are .jpg files. There is no reason that Safari cannot load them. Therefore, the problem lies with your setup. However, we know nothing about your setup. Rather than a back-and-forth that goes on for about 3 weeks, it might be easier if you ran and saved a profile from System...

ethernet option not working on Mac OS 8.1

Wow! After 15 months, you return. If your TCP/IP option appears and disappears depending on when you move system files around, then my suggestion is not to move things that you don't understand.

Computer logs in as root on accident

Huh? What in the World are you doing? Administrator is the type of account in MacOS X, not your user name. I have seen and used accounts in Windows called "Administrator," but never on the Mac. The first account established on a new Mac is an administrator account. All other accounts are as you...

    importing in iPhoto

Unless you deleted the originals, your photographs are still in place. Copies were placed in your iPhoto Library bundle. Because you already have your photographs arranged to your liking, it sounds like your best option is to leave them in place and to use [i]iPhoto[/b] to view them.

Lion can not map network drive on os 9.1

That MacOS X is based on BSD is obviously true, but has little to do with the presence or absence of CREATOR/TYPE codes.* The fact is that they still exist in Lion. With MacOS X 10 through MacOS X 10.4, they were very important. IIRC, Apple de-prioritized them in Leopard but they are still...

    Cache Folder for Safari

Bunk. The purpose of the cache is to keep local copies of Web-based files rather than having to re-download them every time you access them. The only way that your cache can consistently slow you down is for your network connection to be faster than your hard drive connection.
