Why the new imac will fail

Well, I just did a straight currency conversion to show how lucky the US guys are! Yup, that's what things come to. OK, so some states have sales tax to go on top of the Apple prices, but I bet that tax isn't nearly 18%!! This has always been the UK's experience with Apple products. For...

Ultimate OpenSource MacOSX 10.1.2 SET UP?

Well that's pretty offensive to a lot of people out there. Not everyone needs / wants a fully-fledged photo-editing tool, and iPhoto may well suit their requirements just fine. But overall point taken. An interesting thread.

Why the new imac will fail

Agreed -- SO annoying! Unless you're a business, you're going to be paying VAT. So the prices of the new iMac in UK are as follows: - CD-RW 700 MHz: £987 ex VAT, £1149 inc VAT - Combo 700 MHz: £1105 ex VAT, £1299 inc VAT - Super 800 MHz: £1361 ex VAT, £1599 inc VAT Now, the current...

Does anyone else NOT like iPhoto?

I don't have iPhoto -- heck, I don't have OS X! -- but the blurb about tha app seems to be focussed on digital cameras. Now that seems OK to me, but is there no support for scanners? Can you scan directly to iPhoto? Does it include any specific scanner support? Just interested...

Why the new imac will fail

This old chestnut from Kilowatt: Exactly. If I wanted all that kind of stuff, I'd buy a PowerMac. This is a consumer machine with limited expandability!!!! How many times do people have to say it?!? Anyway, I quite like it. Wasn't sure at first. But then I only have a...

This is probably the closest real vision of the new iMac.

... that's intriguing. I wonder. Given the clean glossy white of the iPod, and potentially of the iWalk, I imagine that Apple would indeed perhaps go with this style for a new consumer-oriented Macintosh. But who knows! Like they said... "Think different."

This is probably the closest real vision of the new iMac.

I just said it's a realistic design. Which it is. At no time did I say it's the final design; it clearly ISN'T. The leg at the back would be at the rear of the drive casing, and would form a tripod along with the two front legs for the flat panel screen. Does no-one remember the 20th...

This is probably the closest real vision of the new iMac.

... this IS a realistic design. It's not totally flat -- where the DVD/CD drive is, if you think about it of course you don't fold 'em (!). There's a full size drive in there, forming a "prop" base for the main unit.

    Cool idea for iPod users...

... contrast that REX thing. A credit-card sized PIM which is basically only good for displaying information. The idea is that it syncs, regularly, with your PC, so that it's the latter device that you enter the information into. The REX is simply used for referencing this info. Personally, I...

What do you do for a living?

I started off as a trainee chartered accountant for a Big 5 firm in the UK. Hated it. Well, I'm a BA Hons in American Studies (literature & politics mainly) for Pete's sake! So I stopped training, and now I'm a developer there instead, specialising in Lotus Notes / Domino / web / bit of VB...

    How to Learn Cocoa

I'm currently learning Java, and started out developing in Lotus Notes, the web, etc. I've always wanted to be able to get into development on my home machine (which has always been a Mac), and at last Mac OS X has given me the incentive to do so with its Java 2 integration and Cocoa...
