    Help!

Opps! Sorry! We were talking at you, rather than with you. Disk Warrior ($100) http://www.alsoft.com (which you should purchase on CD, not via download) is a fairly unique utility which will create a new, perfect copy of your hard drive's invisible directory. (The thing that allows...

    Help!

Yes, the CD that DW comes on is a boot disk. (Though it takes forever to startup.) But that should work! if the problematic external hard drive keeps him from switching startup drives, he can always detach the drive (USB and Firewire are hot plugable), startup from the DW CD, and then...

    Help!

Good question. I don't know offhand. All that I know is that fairly recently I helped someone having a similar problem where they couldn't unmount their hard drive, and they could only turn off their computer by unplugging it. It turned out that something was running, and when it was killed...

    Help!

It was worth a shot. Often a drive will refuse to unmount because something on it is running. If the drive won't unmount, most disk repair utilities won't touch it. You might want to leave Activity Monitor's window open for a while and see if anything pops up.

    Help!

Try this and see if it helps. Launch Activity Monitor (in your Utilities folder). See if there is anything running that is on that external hard drive. If so, choose the item that is running, and then click on the stop sign icon that says "Stop Process" at the top of the screen. Once all...

What kind of external drive should I buy?

I'm not interested in personally catering to the whims of a rude ego-involved troll who twists what I have to say. I've tried to help others here who have questions, I'm happy to let them judge what I have to say for themselves. Moderators...please step in. I'm shocked at how inhospitable...

What kind of external drive should I buy?

I understand the concept of "once burned, twice shy." In fact, I can't think of a major brand of hard drive that some time in the past 20 years did not have a bad batch of drives with a high failure rate. However, as you said, and as I said in my original post, it has been a very long time...

What kind of external drive should I buy?

Putting an internal drive mechanism into an external case kit is child's play. The case kit comes mostly pre-assembled. Usually there are only four steps total to put it together. Assembly requires nothing more than a phillips screwdriver to screw in maybe one or two screws. The screws attach...

The names on the cover of TMB are, and have always been, the *editors*. I've never been an editor. The names of the authors of TMB were usually at the beginning of each chapter, and each section within a chapter had the initials of the contributing author(s) to that section on them. TMB...

What kind of external drive should I buy?

You are putting words in my mouth. Read what I said. I said that WD does not *support* booting from any of their drives. They may indeed be bootable, but in my mind if a hard drive company can't support booting any of its drives it is a recognition by them that their products are sub-par...

What kind of external drive should I buy?

I usually prefer external hard drive enclosures with an external power supply. Heat is the natural enemy of magnetic media. An external power supply means that the drive mechanism is not subjected to a lot of heat.

    iWeb troubles

I consider "tight control over placement of elements" to be essential. In fact, it is one of the major points of using a WYSIWYG Web page design program. The more that I worked with iWeb, the less it seemed to want to maintain the placement of elements that should have automatically lined up...

    Xserve - frequent Kernel panics

Bad RAM is a very common reason for kernel panics. I've found that RAM checking software often gives a false negative. The only sure way to test for bad RAM is to swap out RAM cards and/or replace it with known good RAM. Good work!

    iWeb troubles

That almost goes without saying, since iWeb is unable to import HTML. I tried to use iWeb to virtually re-create my site (reusing nothing but the text from the site), because I thought that it might be an easy way to go. But it was just the opposite.

Help Please! 100GB of Hard Drive gone!

Do you have a recent backup of your hard drive? Or is your Mac functional enough to make one? I fear that you may be forced to erase your drive, install a fresh version of the OS, and then restore your software and files from your backup. Unless you can find a way to run the utilities...

Help Please! 100GB of Hard Drive gone!

Try this and see if it helps that problem. Restart your Mac, and hold down the Shift key right after the startup chime is played, and keep it held down until the spinning black bar cursor appears. This procedure invokes what Apple calls a "Safe Boot": http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417...
