sounds like it might be a hardware problem. Does the jack work with just headphones for sound? You may want to take it into an apple service place and let them take a look at it.

Have you done the normal problem solving steps? Repair permissions. Run disk utility. If that fails try an archive and install.

I'd like to confirm EDCC's post. I too have had great success with old PC formatted drives. I replaced a Snow iMac's HD with one and I added another drive to my G4 tower. I haven't had any problems with them.
