You can also see if it connecting to your USB Port as in capturing it, look at system profiler when you connect it next time, and click on USB and see if it states any information on the connected drives.

I posted up there too (looks like you were posting after I typed it, sorry), that you could try (after fsck -fy) run repairpermissions and or updateprebindings ... to boot from a CDROM you could try to reset your PRAM, CMD+Opt+P+R

You would want to do erase and install - actually use the disk utility program to format it as Mac OS Extended (and your choice on journaling), and repartition it. Then install the OS again. - Archive and install won't do you any good if there are errors on the volume.
