    It appears that 27G (of the 40G drive) was being used by this directory: /var/log/samba I don't remember starting a samba server - maybe software update server starts up one to manage it's affairs... don't know - all I do know is that I had to remove the .old file to recover my hard disk...

    that has the pointers to the html files and what not - but that directory doesn't hold the actual downloaded packages - even after I removed that, my disk is still 88% full - so still need to find where they hid those damn packages! :(
