    Lion thoughts

I think the moment of truth for me will be installing it on my parent's iMac and seeing how my mother, who only uses computers when she has to, responds to it. Back in the old days, I considered ease of use a high priority, and I judged it mainly on how easily people who never used computers...

EMERGENCY: Recovering files after a hard drive wipe

The most important thing is, don't actively use the drive. Don't even mount it if you can avoid it. All I can tell you is that Data Rescue has been saving my butt periodically for about 15 years. It has saved me from corrupted file systems, and YES, even reformatted drives. The free demo will...

    Lion thoughts

I've been looking at the info Apple's posted on Lion. A few thoughts I have: I'm not looking forwards to a world of full-screen apps. I know Apple isn't forcing it on anyone, but they have a way of marginalizing and neglecting the "old way" of doing things so much as to effectively force the...

Simple question: Moving to a new computer?

I'd recommend setting up Time Machine if you haven't done so already. Then when you boot up your new Mac, the Migration Assistant will give you the option to migrate from a Time Machine backup. Do you by any chance use FileVault to encrypt your home folders? If so, just make sure you don't...

Mac os snow leopard run slow on macbook?

In my experience Snow Leopard is as good or better on the same hardware as Leopard. That said, you should definitely consider a memory upgrade. Whatever OS you choose, you will notice the difference. I have 2GB of RAM and am considering an upgrade to 8GB (it's less than US$100 now). crucial.com...

Why? MacBook Air Prompts Password Sometimes Fast After Opening & Sometimes Delayed

When it's asleep for long enough it goes into hibernation mode to conserve more battery power. This means saving your session state to the SSD and powering off just about everything. Then when you open it, it powers everything back on, and reads the saved state off the SSD. This takes a little...

    Wine Applescript Terminal

Can you post the commands you put in Terminal and the text of your AppleScript? If you want AppleScript to send more than one command to Terminal, you can put all the commands on one line, separated with semicolons.

    Snow Leopard Folder Icon/Dock Question

Control-click the icon and select "Display As > Folder" instead of "Display As > Stack". Then it will work like in Tiger.

Any Must-Haves for Computer Maintenance with Snow Leopard?

Keep in mind that some Flash cookies are actually useful. If you play any Flash games online they use Flash cookies to store your progress/scores/etc.

Any Must-Haves for Computer Maintenance with Snow Leopard?

Onyx is still regularly updated and still free. The Flash cookies thing is a matter of privacy, not performance. As you may know, web sites can use cookies to track your browsing habits (generally for advertising purposes). All browsers allow you to clear your cookies easily, but Flash cookies...

My Baby Died. :( My New Baby is an Air. How Do You Like Air & Snow Leopard? Browser ?

Good to see you back, Amie! I've never used a MacBook air myself. I've never found myself thinking "darn, this 13" MacBook Pro is just TOO BIG", and I like my ports, SD slot and speed, so I wouldn't be motivated to switch. But for what it is, I think it's a nice system. Much more appealing than...

Safari Dead because of Facebook Hack?

It doesn't relate to the Facebook thing, but out of curiosity, can you go to System Preferences > Network > Advanced > Proxies and see if anything is enabled for HTTP or HTTPS? I ask because Safari uses the proxy set there for web access while Firefox doesn't (by default). Also, in Safari, what...

Recommend MacOS X GUI programing language or framework

That's pretty much it. You can use other frameworks, like Qt or wxWidgets, but the apps you make will seem "un-Mac-like". Objective-C/Cocoa is the language/framework combo to use for OS X. Everything else is a second-class citizen in the Mac world.

Does FireFox Suck with OS 10.6.7

Try using a utility like Onyx to clear the font caches. I noticed some font-related APIs near the top of the crash-log, so maybe something's screwy there. Just a thought. Also, Firefox 4 was just released. You might want to try it out.

Constant beachballs in safari…what a dog.

My cookie-cutter advice for mysterious slowdowns is: - Clear your cache (for web browsers). - Download a utility like Onyx and run the daily, weekly and monthly maintenance scripts.

    Apple Script

I like to use a timestamp to fix the naming issue, like this: tell application "Finder" if file att_save_file exists then set AppleScript's text item delimiters to "." set ext to (the last text item of att_save_file) set fname to text items 1 thru ((the number of text items of...

    Site not remembering login?

It looks like it's just the forum index that doesn't show me as logged in. If I click any link -- say, Calendar or FAQ -- then I'll be logged in as normal. Less hassle than putting in my name and password.

    Site not remembering login?

Yeah, me too. Past week or so. I just cleared my cookies assuming that would fix the problem (it's happened before), but after reading this, I guess not.

    C++(CPP) Vs. Cocoa

C++ and Objective-C are languages; Cocoa is an API. If you want to make desktop apps, you will need an API like Cocoa no matter what language you use. Some more C++-friendly APIs are WxWidgets and Qt. But they are not as Mac-like as Cocoa. There are also Cocoa bridges for a a variety of...
