Stop putting crap in my Documents folder!!

I do find it annoying, it's a very Windows thing to do (my My Documents folder is full of Adobe and Microsoft crap). There's a reason there's ~/Library/Application Support/ it's for all those folders that you never have a reason to look at that don't need to be in your Documents folder (or...

    Background image in .dmg?

The easiest way I've found: 1) Create new disk image as read/writable from the folder of files you want on the disk image, including the image. 2) Open the disk image in a new window, position everything how you want it, size the window. 3) Set the view options to that image 4) With...

    executing php files thru safari

You can do "PHP filename.php" on the command line to have PHP parse the script properly. You'd have to either output that to a file or pipe it to the browser... not sure how to do that in OS X just yet. Some editors probably do this (BBEdit doesn't though). Directly accessing a PHP script...

the gmail website has a page on how to setup Mail for gmail. You need to make sure to change some ports as well. It's easy to overlook.

Mac OS X 10.1 not booting

I never used 10.1, but it sounds like it can't find the startup disk. I don't if this will work with 10.1, but in other versions of OS X, you can hold down the Option key while booting, and it should bring up a list of the available disks that it can boot from.

    .bin won't open

BIN is also used as a disk image file, more common in Windows. Kinda like an ISO or a DMG. Though, you can easily change all BIN files on your Mac to open with Stuffit in the Get Info window... just click Change All button.

Find by name using spotlight index

In the Spotlight search field, putting quotes around individual names of a filename seems to work, or the whole search string if you want to be exact.

    Anti-Virus programs for 10.4.1?

Probably the easiest way to get a user to run a malicious program is to make it look like something innocent, say something like "song.mp3.app". Most Mac users (just like all my Windows-using customers) have "hide extensions" turned on (I guess because it's less confusing). With hidden...

    Anti-Virus programs for 10.4.1?

Despite there being no viruses for OS X, you can still spread viruses (particularly email virus) to Windows users. Most are easily avoidable, but Word virus are harder to detect. I had a problem with a company I do work for that was getting all their emailed quotes rejected from their...

    Illegal file names??

How is the drive formatted? FAT32? FAT32 drives also have length limits as well as stricter character limits. If you can, format it is HFS+.

Admin accounts missing from login window

I just did an upgrade to Tiger on nine company computers today. Each computer has an administrator account (called "Admin") and a standard user account for the user of that computer. After each upgrade, the Admin accounts no longer show up in the login window or the fast user switching menu...

    Hide Mail on Launch?

Yes. Seems pretty common on the Apple Discussion boards. Odd that it works for some people though and not others. :) That probably means Apple will never fix it.

Make Spotlight search System and hidden files?

I've noticed that Spotlight will not return results when I search for files that are in the System folder (I did a reindex just to make sure), and of course it won't find hidden files (or any Unix files). Is there a way to make Spotlight index everything?

    Dashboard Clock Hack

Check Mac OS X Hints... there was something on there about changing the text for the city. I think you basically open the package and mess with the Javascript code.

What is CGDrawBitmap? and what's wrong with it?

A lot of changes were made to the underlying frameworks. Most of my code now gives me warnings saying to no longer use certain functions under Tiger unless I need to support past systems.

Newest known Tiger build: Mac OS X 10.4.3 8F8

Still didn't fix the bug with Mail not hiding if set as a login item. That's very annoying.

How do I open .bin and .hqx files on Tiger

You should be able to double-click them to expand them. They are compressed files (similar to .zip or .rar which are more common in Windows). I'm not sure if Stuffit Expander is required to open .bin and .hqx files in Tiger, .sitx files, you will need Stuffit Expander to open. Once you...

Daft 'short name' now home folder. how can i change it?

Create a new user account, make sure that your short name is how you want it to appear on your home folder (I use just my first name, capitalized). Move all the contents of your old home folder to the new home folder. I would think that would work, it's basically what I do when I do a clean...

    Hide Mail on Launch?

In Panther I alwasy had Mail startup when I logged in and had it set to 'Hide" so that the window would never pop up. In Tiger, it seems like the 'Hide' isn't working for me in Mail, but works for Safari and other apps. Is anyone else having this? Or is it just me? :)
