Where should be all the Fonts to reside?

2 questions as a follow up to this: 1. Where do I install fonts so that all users can access all of the fonts in all programmes that use fonts? 2. Can someone explain Mac font types to me please? AFAIK, there's dfont, ttf and otf, where otf and ttf are the only ones interchangeable with a PC...

    Windoze: "choose icon", Mac: ?

When you create a folder, how do you choose what the icon is going to be? I've got a "Documents" folder on my desktop, and I want it to have a little Document on it. Likewise I've got a "Photoshop" folder, and I want it to have a little picture on it. Just for effect :).

Thank you for that... tried that, and I'm back to having gobbledeygook on the support screen under "resolution" (which is not selectable), and the normal options on the main screen. Selecting the "Color" tab and leads to System Preferences crashing. Trying to start "Displays" when the System...

Firefox: Where the Heck Is the Apple + Down Arrow Feature???

I have to say I *quite* like Firefox's bookmark handling, and that's what I do a lot of. Haven't tried this Camino thing though, will give that a go. FWIW, PC-wise, I can see why people rave about Firefox. Beats every other browser out there hands down.

I like it that I have an "intrigueing" problem. My housemate (IT professional) described it similarly! OK, I've run Cocktail and System Optimizer X, and they have seemingly fixed the problem of System Preferences crashing when "Displays" is opened. In other words, I can now open displays...

OK, more playing around and I can get System Prefs to load up "Displays" if I: 1. Start System Prefs on the left screen (master screen- connected directly to G4) 2. Move window to right screen (support screen- connected to G4 via ??ADC??) 3. Double click "Displays". It then opens up "Displays"...

This is an interesting one. "Displays" in system preferences worked once, very briefly a while ago. Playing around with it, I swapped the finder menu bar to be on the second screen. However Displays is back to its old trick now of making System Prefs crash when clicked. So, I could disconnect...

Right, formatted HD and put a partition on there. I now have HD 1 (8.85 GB) and HD 2 (the rest of the 80 GB). OSX running nicely (but see below), and the 100 MB 10.2.8 update is happily downloading. HOWEVER... all this came about because I tried to set up another login account, on advice that a...

Tried that one. Have now managed to firewire the offending machine to another one and recover the contents of the HD that I wanted to keep. HOWEVER... I am now trying to reinstall OSX 10.2, and in the installation I get to "select the volume to install OSX" with no volumes listed. I run Disk...

*nvm* ??? Does that mean "not very much", or is it something I have to do to boot to OS9?

    Desktop not loading at all

Right, I'm giving up on the idea of loading a USB memory stick- it's beyond me. Going back to the plan of loading up OS9, because I do want to save some of the data on the HD (or at least have a jolly good crack at it). Starting up holding OPT gives me OSX on the HD, and nothing else. Is there...

Mounting a USB memory stick in the black screen

It wasn't visible in /Volumes/... What I am trying now is to manually mount it with the following command set: (after SystemStarter): //sbin/mount -uw / then /sbin/mount_msdos /dev/disk1s1 /Volumes/KINGSTON Where the Memory stick calls itself "Kingston". ... and it's not working!!! I've...

Mounting a USB memory stick in the black screen

To get some files off my corrupt OS, I am trying to transfer them to a USB memory stick. However I first need to mount the USB stick in the black text-only screen (what do you call that?- the one you get to if you boot up and hold CMD-S). How do I do this?

We've just tried the mounting via firewire thing. Startup pressing T, the firewire screen comes up on my G4 but the drive never mounts on the other mac (also a G4, not sure which version of OSX it's running though). Next thing I will be trying is to recover the files I want to keep via the UNIX...

"the volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK".... I type "reboot". And we're still back to where we were at the beginning. Left screen- aqua, right screen- plain blue. My housemate is an IT professional, and he remarked that it's basically missing a login screen. I'm a bit dubious about changing...

Right, OSX 10.2 repaired according to the installer. However it's still doing *exactly* the same thing.

It's 2002 vintage, I believe. I am booting at this moment off the OSX disk, and have selected a repair installation (archiving network settings etc etc). If this doesn't work, format HD it is! I'm not that worried about formatting the HD, losing a couple of files and putting all the software...

That doesn't give me an option to boot OS9. I've got the OSX CD in the drive, though- would that have something to do with it?

Aaah, I've had an idea. How about I boot it up in OS9? How can I do that?
