    restarting samba

yeah - the easiest way to do this is via a 3rd party graphical tool called SharePoints (check for it at http://www.versiontracker.com. This has an SMB Properties panel where you can "update properties" as well as set & define smb shares. OSX is not Redhat-based - it's based on Darwin/BSD

    Non-iSight suggestions for iChatAV?

cool - thanks for the link to the 1394 competitors - I didn't know there were any (apparently Apple's done a good job of promoting their iSight, eh?). Couple more questions 1.) It seems that only the iSight comes with microphone (though iBotPro does too apparently). Do you have any ideas...

    Non-iSight suggestions for iChatAV?

Hey - i'm interested in getting a digital web cam for my mom so she can see our upcoming baby via iChat AV. She's on a G4 Cube & I've got a dual 2Ghz G5. As I'm planning to buy a firewire DV Cam (CanonZR80) I won't be buying an iSight for myself (I assume that should work, right?). As...

Non-iPod Compatibility with MacOSX & iTunes?

excellent point mDonkey. Don't know why I didn't think of that... (a side note: you've got SPARC spelled wrong in your sig). We'll see if the client actually comes through with anything but I think I'll either take your advice or else get a standard firewire external harddrive... At...

Non-iPod Compatibility with MacOSX & iTunes?

Hey - I know everyone here loves iPods & whatnot but I've got a chance to get a free piece of hardware from a client I've done some work for & he doesn't have access to iPods through his wholesalers... I'm interested in having a portable storage/MP3 solution but unclear as to how supported (if...

Help me understand Apple File Sharing

Well it would appear that it *is* possible to unmount an authenticated server (sometimes) by right-clicking (ctrl-clicking) the COMPUTER name in the network browser (not one of its shared volumes) and then selecting Eject. This has proven to work but I'm pretty sure I've had some times when it...

Help me understand Apple File Sharing

So I'm a pretty experienced computer user -- have used Macs since '94 or so and have experience with pretty much every MacOS since 7.6. Around 2000 I switched to Windows (for 3D animation/Maya reasons -- sadly the mac wasn't up to that sorta work until the G5 came out) and just recently came...

    address book Backup Database

i'm not so convinced that Finder handles it fine since as mentioned at the top, Finder wouldn't let me drag a file from one mac to another mac until I removed the forward slashes. Not a big deal but interesting.

    address book Backup Database

nope - just tried to copy by dragging from my iBook hard drive to the shared volume (destination has been both a windows share and a G5 share with same results). As soon as I rename the file to use no /'s it's much more willing to do the copy. not a big deal, just an odd quirk, similar to...

    address book Backup Database

Anyone else notice that if you do an Address Book "File>Backup Database", the default file name includes the date (in the MM/DD/YY format)? And that if you try to copy this to another computer it won't let you cuz it's choking on the forward slashes? seems like they should make the default...

    Junk Mail stopped working AGAIN!

I trashed mine (for other Mail.app issues) and it definitely lost track of my list of accounts (somehow remembering one I had deleted ages ago). While deleting prefs can fix many issues, it's not without a reconfiguration price.

    Coupla Mail.app questions

Yep. And not only does it only show peopel who have email addresses, but it does'nt have the + button to add a new address from scratch. thoroughly bizarre & annoying. If I want to send an address to people, I generally just type in the To: field and let it complete for me. The "feature"...

    Coupla Mail.app questions

here's the simple way to make an applescript that will launch the Address book. just make a new apple script with this in it: tell application "Finder" open "Macintosh HD:Applications:Address Book.app" end tell And then put that applescript in your Macintosh HD:Library:Scripts:Mail...

    Coupla Mail.app questions

    Coupla Mail.app questions

thanks for the tips. I already knew how to add senders to address books, was trying to add a new person from scratch without having to have the Address book app on my dock. I understand that I will likely still have to use Address book but want to figure out an AppleScript that will launch...

    Coupla Mail.app questions

I just got my new dual G5 & am totally psyched to use it & leave the dregs of Microsoft behind me whenever possible. Thus I am leaving Outlook 2000 for Windows in favor of Mail.App for OSX 10.3 however, got some general questions about using it that don't seem readily clear: 1.) How do I...

Contextual Menus broken after Panther upgrade

good cally, Cheryl - I did an upgrade. this "archive & preserve install" is the equivalent of the old "Clean Install", then? I'm gradually learning OSX intricacies as I dropped off the Mac bandwagon around OS9 and have only recently managed to be the prodigal compy user with access to...

Contextual Menus broken after Panther upgrade

Thanks, Bobw (ironicallly my dad's name is Bob W, and he would have no idea about anything mac :). I'll try fiddling with the finder contextual menu items to see if that fixes it. I know that there may have been some toast issues due to the timings of upgrading to 10.2 and then 10.3 as well as...

Contextual Menus broken after Panther upgrade

well thanks anyways - while it did find a few things to fix (and fixed them) after doing so, the finder still relaunches when a contextual menu opens most of the time. Other programs don't have this happen so it's definitely a finder thing. I've noticed elsewhere on macosx.com that someone...
