    Hard drives and partitions

Charon: with a swap partition your computer will be faster, yes, as chenly said. And if you use heavy programs as Photoshop, a swap may be handy! :)

    Website Creation Tools

WebDesign is a pretty good WYSIWYG-editor. It's not super-advanced, but it still has many nice feautres. The OS X version is still a bit buggy, but it works fine. WebDesign is shareware and a registration costs 29.95$. Without registration you can load it 15 times. Worth a try! :) Kris

    Hard drives and partitions

I hope this helps: :) Easily exlplained a swap file, or partition, is a part of your hard drive that is used as virtual memory. Your computer then thinks it has more RAM than it actually does. The last recent files in your RAM can be swappet to your hard drive until they are needed again, and...

    Hard drives and partitions

Charon: I have had my OS9 and OSX systems on the same partition, and you're right; it works fine. - Until you need to re-install one of the systems, or something like that. Then you have to do the whole process all over again, and it takes time... chenly: does really OS9 need a swap...

    iPod or MiniDisc?

simX: Yeah.. Apple's products are expensive. But then again.. you pay for quality. :) 400$ for an iPod wasn't that bad actually. That's the same as a good MiniDisc. - So I checked with the store where they sell Mac producs over here (northern Europe), but here the iPod 5GB costs around 500$...

    iPod or MiniDisc?

I kinda thought I'd get replies like that! :) themacko: I totally agree. The recording-prcess with MiniDiscs is a big minus. - But you CAN record from the TV... you can't do that with an iPod.. :p How much is it for an iPod in the states? Kris

    iPod or MiniDisc?

After houres of everyday use for about one and a half year my MiniDisc had started to become a bit.. tired. (So much for that quality!) So I have been thinking of an mp3 player instead, - like iPod. It just sounds great. 10GB of disc space. Houres of music. And it's like an extra hard drive...

    Hard drives and partitions

Thank you all for your replies! :) I think 5 GB to OS 9 seems a bit much, but I get the point. You place the whole OS X system on one partition, right? So you have your home dir at the OS X partition, but all the "heavy" files on the third partition. Correct? - And the swap partition...

    Hard drives and partitions

It has occured to me that it would be better to have two partitions, one for OS X and one for OS 9, than just one for both. (Yeah.... maybe I should have thought about that before... :)) Anyway. How big should these partitions be if you have a 40GB hard drive? Would this be ok? 2 GB OS 9...

    MacGIMP, XFree86 and XDarwin

I tried to install MacGIMP here the other day, but it didn't seem to work. Searching this forum for some help, I discouvered that other people have had the same problems as I. Though I couldn't find the answers to all my questions. MacGIMP, and appearantly XDarwin got innstalled. I can run the...

    Won't Print...

    - learner, I have the exact same problem! My epson printer will print fine in OS 9, but not in OS X. The Print Center says my printer is unsupported, which I find very strange. Epecially since it worked well before, but no when I re-installed it. Can anyone help? Kris

    Floppy in OS X

Thank you for your help, testuser. If I copy the files from the floppy to the hard drive they still don't work. I think the floppy is just too old and full of bad-blocks, - as you said. I think I will try repair it in an older version of Mac OS (on one of my other Macs), and if that...

    Floppy in OS X

Thank you all for your help. My Floppy Drive is made by LaCie, and I'm using the driver that came with it. The floppys that seems to be messed up has been used on a Mac before, not a PC (Windows). And the disc itself seems to work fine, but the files don't. Maybe it's the disc? Can...

    Floppy in OS X

Thank you for your reply. The floppy disc icon apperas normally on the desktop when I put in the floppy. But when I open the disc, the file-icons are all blank, and some of the names doesn't appear right. I tried with several discs, but they're all the same. When I put in formatted discs, the...

    Floppy in OS X

Hi, Why Apple doesn't ship their newest machines with Floppy Discs is totally undertandable. But some of us still needs to use them... The Floppy Discs work fine in OS X, - as long as they are Mac-formatted. Why is this? In the older systems you where able to read files that where located...

    root and users (once again)

    root and users (once again)

You're probably tired of the endless questions about root.. But I've got one more.. I have read several post about root and how and why you shouldn't enable it. And I've got the point; security. But let's say you enabled root, and logged in a couple of times. Later you decided to login as...

    Names and users

I have a small problem. How can you change a users shortname? The name is easily changeable, but the shortname isn't. Pretty logical, I know, but how to change it without messing up the system too much? And another thing. I read that you shouldn't log in as root, due to the security. But...
