    Superdrive on MacBook Pro

The beauty of market protectionism. Free trade my a$$! I've ordered my 2.0 GHz Intel Powerbook 10 days ago and I will sure as hell throw that gawddamn MatSHITa drive out of the window as soon as there's a replacement drive (different brand) available. Just wait and see how much they (Movie...

How warm is your MacBook Pro?

Would you mind sharing pictures of your setup? Sound most interesting! Even more so since I intend to get one of them new Intel beasts (despite their name which I still didn't get over not liking ;) ).

    Superdrive on MacBook Pro

Well that seems to depend on the drive. I have repeatedly read in the rpc1.org forums that some drives even beat software solutions like VLC. Look at the first post of this thread for example. Well anyways, I'm hoping for VLC to work with the UJ-857 even though VLC does have trouble on my...

    Superdrive on MacBook Pro

As far as my information goes the VLC work around does not work reliably or at all with some more viciously enhanced MatSHITa drives. Believe me, I live on the same planet as you.

    Superdrive on MacBook Pro

Nevermind, I just found out which drive is employed: It's the Matshita UJ-857. Since it is a Matshita drive it will unfortunately most likely not be firmware-hackable for those of us who - in perfect accordance to the law - purchased DVDs with different region codes. I know, some people hold a...

    Superdrive on MacBook Pro

Does anyone know yet which drive exactly Apple is building into the Intel Powerbooks? Or at least which brand?

OK, nobody seems to care too much. I for my part have found a way of dealing with the situation: I'll just call it The computer formerly known as Powerbook On the long run I guess I'll have to get used to whatever name Apple thinks of. After all I got used to the name "iMac" shortly after...

    Apache Security

It's basically the same as securing any other installation of Apache. You don't need to google for an OSX specific approach. There's plenty information out there about Apache configuration. In what way do you want to secure Apache exactly? It's already quite secure out of the box.

Ability to dual boot and/or possibility to smoothly integrate a virtual Windows environment would definitely benefit the community. Sometimes you are just forced to use some Windows-only app. I am, at times forced to use FrontPage, which I think is a hideous piece of you-know-what just to...

    Apple Announces MacBook Pro

Don't let yourself be irritated by that too much. It's the overall experience (hardarware & software) that counts. The poor ingnorants want Windows? Let them have it! I don't pity masochists either. If they are graphic designer they pretty much disqualify as such for me when they seriously...

Ouch. Performa. The very name makes me wanna PerforATE one of them boxes. Those were the dark days before Jobs' second coming :D Of course you're right about occasional renaming. But does it have to be what they chose?

Thanks. I got the analogy from someone in an aftermath discussion. Can't link to it though because I'm the web surfer equival of an ADD kid ;) and tend to visit too many places in too short a time. Of course it's not the name that makes PCs suck. But I look at Apple products as a whole...

Point taken. The "Macintosh" name was dropped a while ago. Now they reintroduce its short form. Fine with me. I just feel that they could have come up with a better name for the Intel PowerBooks. Yes, I can't provide you with a better name right here right now but then again, I'm neither a...

That is hardly a good analogy. Floppies have been around for too long and had to be axed because they have by then been replaced by far superior alternatives and because their obsolescence was glaringly apparent at the time. That's a technological advancement. BUT we're talking about rebranding...

Here we go. I am determined to boycott Apple's renaming of the well established PowerBook brand to something that sounds like a joke and could have just as well been brought up by the bright marketing folks at Dell or HP (their equivalent being something like "Win Book Pro" or "Windows Book...

    Airport connection / sleep issue

OK, a few days after going back to Ethernet I decided to give Airport another chance. To my surprise, the Airport connection has been stable for a few days now even though I haven't changed anything since last time I used it. This is all a bit weird but I won't complain :D
