    Good IRC?

I've tried all the available IRC clients and haven't been thrilled overall, but here's the better out of the lot (bearing in mind that my mantra is 'free, free, free -- shareware was out of the running): ircii for the command line. JediKnight 2.0 is one of the best free IRC client for OS X (in...

    10.2.4 update replaces httpd.conf

Sure, if you want Rendezvous support. I don't want my server to bear that extra load as its functionality is unnecessary in my situation (no matter how great or small the added load actually is). So I just backed up Apple's new configuration and put my old one back in place. Doubtless others...

Running apache server on old iMac?

My server machine is a 7500/233 with 128MB of RAM and 6GB of storage, attached to an ADSL line via 10Base-T Ethernet. It handles the web server load just fine. The Darwin core and apache are extremely effecient, as you would expect from any UNIX variant. It is only the Aqua GUI that is slow. If...

    Undeleting files

No, Data Rescue is meant for finding trashed files. I have successfully recovered a whole partition of data with it that one of my users *accidentally* deleted. I don't think you will find and free or open source alternatives. Data recovery is a very, very low level and intensive effort. It...

    10.2.4 update replaces httpd.conf

How to restore your previous apache configuration to its pre-10.2.4 state (this will cause the Rendezvous modules not to be called, but will get you back up and running as you were before): sudo -s cd /etc/httpd cp -pf httpd.conf httpd.conf.10.2.4 mv httpd.conf.applesaved httpd.conf apachectl...

To be honest, I didn't vote because I don't care for any of them.

    Antialiasing

I'm not sure about how Apple implements their 'Standard - best for CRT', Light, 'Medium - best for flat panel', and Strong preset font smoothing algorithms, but here is as fine of a control as you can get (as far as setting a font size threshold: defaults write 'Apple Global Domain'...

    softwareupdate via command line question

There is a GUI (it came first): /System/Library/CoreServices/Software Update.app The command line tool came second. I think it's purpose is for remote administration (especially for applying security patches). For updating GUI applications while still at the console, it's pretty pointless and...

    softwareupdate via command line question

Apple's command line tool is pretty cumbersome to use: sudo softwareupdate "Safari Update 2-12-03 (1.0 Beta (v60))" It would be nice if they could just give each item a catalog number and that would be the argument to use for installation, rather than such cumbersome names with spaces...

Formatting a MMC card with FAT32 via the Terminal...? help!

mild rave sudo is 'substitute user do' or 'super user do', depending on who you ask. Anything that you need to do as root, you can do with sudo. If you want to actually get a root shell, just type sudo -s and enter your administrator password. You will then have a full root shell. There's no...

Formatting a MMC card with FAT32 via the Terminal...? help!

You should have unmounted the disk before running the newfs command. Now you should refresh the disk arbitration table with: disktool -r and then df again and then diskutil followed by the correct arguments. (Run it without arguments to get an acceptable syntax list.)

as root changed Drive Permissions! BAD! HELP!

What exactly did you do? You got info on / (your boot volume) and set the group and other permissions to what exactly? Did you click on the "Apply to Enclosed Items..." button? At this point, the easiest and fastest thing to do would be to boot off of a Jaguar install CD and run Disk Utility...
