nytimes reports apple video laptop hints

I'm reasonably certain that Mossberg works for the Washington Post, not the NYT (but not guaranteed).

anybody know how this was done (itunes catalog)?

The Source Code states that the page was generated with iTunes Catalog 1.8.4, available http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/21403&vid=209546

How can I connect 2 Macs over the net?

The biggest deal is *programs*. VNC can do it, but it's not the best way (it's slow). No matter what solution you use, you'll more than likely need firewall holes opened for your machine; you'll have to talk to your IT department.

How does dust affect my G5 and how do I clean it out?

Dust is bad stuff, because it insulates the heat underneath it; working much like a blanket. I've always been told that compressed air is where it's at. Cheaper than a vacuum I'd think, too.

Seeking simple DVD authoring tool for Tiger

iVCD is an excellent program worth checking out for short clips where a DVD would be overkill.

Pulling a flash movie from a website?

If you can post the site's URL, we can easily tell you the URL. Otherwise, the easiest way is to View the Source (Cmd+Opt+U), then do a Find (Cmd+F) for ".swf", then copy everything between the quotation marks that it found and put it after the last slash in the URL. That is: if the thing...

    Virus? December 31st, 1969

One thing to mention: they don't recall CMOS batteries (do they call them CMOS batteries in Macs?). The battery that's making your time reset is NOT your laptop's normal battery (which quite possibly DOES need recall if you're a PowerBook G4 owner), it's a small round battery not normally...

Apple Dock : Genie and Loading Effect. They trademarked by apple?

The original poster's edit is the big thing: Using it as a frontend or, in general, Application launching interface IS a ripoff; IIRC, Apple's lawyers were unleashed upon the author of the Windows Dock application "Y'z Dock"

What do I need to achieve this?

There are many presentation remotes which allow you to control the mouse etc. remotely, including software like Salling Clicker and Romeo which work with many Bluetooth phones.

Safari: How can I have a drop down listing of my history without typing?

The problem remains that Safari's autocompletion of URLs is ridiculous. If I type in "www.", I get "www.apple.com/quicktime/pro", instead of just "www.apple.com" which I've also visited today. Very, very rarely do people want to go to the most heavily nested document of a webpage from the...

    The "_" character.

Yeah, basically, it's for backwards compatibility with CLI stuff. It's largely needless, but it's an easy trap to fall into. Also a consideration for people who move files back and forth on FAT32 devices (most thumb drives, for instance); the underscore is permitted in the FSes of all versions...

    attaching alarms to birthdays

Wait on; I'm wrong. Sorry. The new (Tiger) way of doing this does NOT allow for alarms! I used to use a third party program called "AddressBookToiCal" which made ordinary appointments on a "Birthday" calendar. In defense of my response, you answered your own question: You said "just like...

Hotmail on Mac for a new Mac user

I disagree; go to the "Advanced" tab of your Hotmail account in Mail, and make sure the second-from-bottom drop down menu is set to either "Mark downloaded messages as read" or "Delete downloaded messages".

    Yahoo! OUTRAGE!!!

The only thing I ever use Yahoo for is its cross-platform video chat (iChat to AIM chats are flaky for me) and pool (which is still Java). That feature does not work in Adium. I now use iChat for everything (including Jabber for MSN)
