    New ATI x800 for Mac

The Radeon 9800 Pro has been available with 256MB for some time now. And noticed now you can get a 6800 GT for a $100 less than the Ultra now. Based on my PC experiences, the GT is so close to an Ultra the difference won't be noticed.

Apple store is down... -> PowerMac G5 Single 1.8 GHz

I think Apple offers too many systems with very little difference from one to the next with the exception of the CPU and FSB speeds on the PowerMac line. With the spec of the new entry level PowerMac, $1299 or $1399 seems to be more in line with what you're getting than $1499. The price goes...

    Video Card

I purchased a 6800 GT for my PC, which is close in performance to the Ultra. ATI is close in performance to nVidia, but theres no way to know how that performance translates over to the Mac. The one thing ATI does have going for it though is that it is a one slot solution versus nVidia's 2...

Apple store is down... -> PowerMac G5 Single 1.8 GHz

Hmm....they throttlde down the FSB to 600Mhz, even compared to the old SP 1.6Ghz which was 800Mhz. That would be an interesting comparison. 1.8/600 vs 1.6/800

    Video Card

The X800 Pro is by far a better performing card. The question is how much you wanna spend and how much of that power translates into a noticable difference. You can guess it's going to be in the neighborhood of $400 plus. If saving $50 to $100 bucks is worth it then stick with a 9800 Pro...

    Video Card

Depends on which X800 comes out. Using PC prices, the X800 Pro goes for about $399, the X800 XT for $499. If ATI is gonna compete with the 6800 Ultra on the Mac they'll more than likely come out the X800 XT model, which wouldn't really require the cheaper cards like the 9800 Pro to be lowered...

    Video Card

It' recently announced so it may be some time before it's available for purchase. Typically I buy from MacMall or CDW. I expect the price to be rather high, perhaps as much as the 6800 Ultra DDL. One thing you should realize when buying a card for Mac is the more memory the card has the...

What do people really think about Microsoft Word?

I have never tried BBedit or Tex-Exit, but I'm looking for a decent text editor on the Mac, so I been meaning to try those. As for the PC, the best editor I've come across is UltraEdit. A day doesn't go by without me using it. No Mac version though.

Does the Powermac G5 have two drives?

I can't understand how so much effort is put on looks and not functionality. I love the look of the G5, but to go from the additional space added in my MDD to just 2 hard drives was a bad idea. Maybe next generation G5 might be able to accomodate.

What do people really think about Microsoft Word?

I also work in the print industry and I've found Word has and is being used as a frontend to many document creation software. The alternatives are usually lacking in features and awkward to use at times even for simple tasks. As for RIPping I wouldn't use Word for that it's limiting.

Now that G5 iMacs have been received...

Is anyone not so impressed with the speed as they thought they'd be?
