Help, please: Java update caused printing problems

/Applications/Utilities/Java/J2SE 5.0/Java Preferences.app You can set the preferred java version back to the previous version. Don't know if it'll help, but there it is.

tiger running SO SLOW on G4 powebook

Launch /Applications/Utilities/Console.app and look through the logs to see if there isn't something constantly throwing error messages. How is the available drive space? When space get tight nearly all processes suffer.

Can't drag or drop my folders or files on Mac.

hmmm. I remember a problem like this with 10.2-ish, but nothing since then. I doubt the fix for that OS version would apply here. Select any recalcitrant document/folder and "get info" on it. What does it say about the access privileges? Now do the same on the parent (the folder containing the...

Which OS X version are you using?

    Restrict AIM

dlloyd is correct, ultimately. Though bobw's firewall suggestions will handle many of the alternate products since they must communicate with the AIM server on a specific port (not sure about the web alternatives). But external proxie servers would allow connections through alternate ports...

    Problems with many things

Before it's too late, back up your user folder and any stray documents!!! After that, you have a couple of options: 1. Buy (if you don't have the latest version) and run DiskWarrior. It may be able to restore your boot volume to working order, where Disk Utility failed. 2. If you cannot get...

    iPod music gone, HELP

I'm pretty sure you're hosed. If you should choose this route in the future, I'd suggest backing up your tunes to DVDs (or external hard drive) as a precaution, should your iPod have problems. This could have been avoided by disabling music sync while your ipod was plugged in, and THEN deleting...

    Restrict AIM

You could set up a launchd (or startup item) daemon that runs facelessly in the background and checks the drive for the offending software, then deletes the software mercilessly from it's location. mwaaahahahahaha!

    Gaining access to root password

erm, did you perform a "sudo ..." operation in the previous 5 minutes-ish? sudo su requests my password unless I've recently issued a sudo command.

    Cannot See/Delete User Account

If the user exists, then us it. You cannot see the postgres user because it's user ID is less than 500. That is by design, not a slip up. You could try following these instructions. This guy has been instramental in providing usable installs for a while now, and has this stuff down...

    Gaining access to root password

Yup. sudo su works fine for me. I get root, with my path defs. sudo -s gives me my paths and roots paths (repeats of the basic paths, or specific to root?). I usually get by nicely with just plain old sudo, though. :)

    Mac on its last leg.....ARGH!!

The Setup Assistant will migrate the OS 9 system folder and applications (both OS9 and 10), and user accounts, and settings... from the old drive. Just make sure you install the OS 9 drivers (formatting option when you installed the new drive. Did you format the new drive first?) I think it...

PowerMac G4 obsessed with the spinning pinwheel

Sounds like the drive is formatted as "extended" which would explain why the drive doesn't show up in OS 9. What you might want to do is run OS 9's System Profiler application and find out the particulars (firmware version for instance) for the machine you purchased. If you don't mind...

Of course you probably already know that the file is called intro-sound.mp3 I also second the Panther intro superiority vote. :p :)

2-finger rightclick missing on macbook pro with osx 10.4.8

Well, my guess would be that specific functionality has to be at least supported by the trackpad input controller (if there is such a thing...) before a control panel can offer such functionality. It is not a shock to me that "older" versions of hardware don't support newer functionality...

where to find printer setup utility?

Hi dlbk, The problem we have with helping you on this is 2 fold: 1.) Your machine came with 10.2.8. You are running 10.3.9. Version 10.3 was a payed upgrade. You cannot download an upgrade from 10.2.anything to 10.3. You have to buy that upgrade. A combo update will not upgrade your 10.2.x...

    CD fails to eject

Be aware that the following suggestion could damage your drive if not performed with extreme caution. If you're not willing to accept that risk, let a professional remove the disk. I wonder if slipping in a very thin, but stiff, light-blocking piece of plastic (not all the way, keep your...
